Can't setup 'hostname'.mynetgear.com

Hello all,

I want to access a hard drive hooked up to our router from any network. I found some instructions and reached the step where I need to register a host name, in 'Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> Dynamic DNS' section. I get an error 'The email/account specified does not exist'. Do I need to create an account at mynetgear.com first? Can host name be arbitrary?

P.S. Phone support is epic. I got a covid message in English and then the rest was in French (?). then a French-speaking rep answered who finally transferred me to an Englis-speaking one.

Thx

Not a very detailed description.  Has it a model number?  Look for
"Model" on the product label.  Firmware version?  Connected to what?

Swell.  For the non-psychics in your audience: Where?

You might need to create one someplace.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.
Look for a topic like "Set Up and Manage Dynamic DNS"?

You can't use one which someone else has already registered.

I don't like your tone.

I always try not to sound condescending when I explain things outside of someone's area of expertise.

In addition, I was rejected technical support because we can't even remember when we purchased the router. This is the first time I see that all technical support expires after some time, even though I don't have a hardware issue. Netgear has a 1-star rating on Consumer Affairs (n=66) and I am going to leave a 'constructive feedback' there as well.

I don't like wasting my time on information-free problem reports from
people who, apparently, don't bother to read the documentation.  And
then fail to respond to requests for the most basic information.

I claim that only a little thought, not great expertise, is required
to include some minimal description of the subject of the inquiry.
(Beyond "our router", that is.  Like, say, an actual model number.)

> [...] I was rejected technical support [...]

   Nothing to do with me.

You just did by replying to my original post. I normally ignore such questions.

The instruction that I found earlier pretty much repeats verbatim what's in the manual. My issue is that the device we have has been registered with another account and I need owner's credentials.

There are probably many other posts on here where you can help. Goodbye.

Another helpful technique in problem reporting is the disclosure of
the actual problem.  For a device registration problem, you might look
here:

Look for "Send email".

It has happened.  Not everyone makes it maximally difficult.
