Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

Hello -
Have a new laptop that I got a few months back - have not been able to set up wireless network with our old WGR614 v6 router.
Background
Dell inspiron / Windows 7 Pro HE
Wireless network is available, but connection fails. I hv re-set up three times / have also added mac address for new wireless card. I think the router just is not recognizing the pc, but I can't seem to fix.

Note - have a nook as well and it doesn't even see the wireless network - not sure if that is related or pertinent.

Thanks in advance - Jim

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

I would not use wireless access list.

make sure to use WPA, WPA2 encryption but try with NO encryption and if works or not

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

Hard to say but some of the newer n adapter on PC side is not compatible with older routers

Trying using different wireless mode- g only instead of B&G only

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

Did you disable the Wireless Access List as June suggested, this is often a problem?

Also, did you change the default network name (SSID) to be sure that you are attempting to connect to your network.

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

June / Andy -

I tried each idea - using wireless mode G only and turning off the access list. Also, I have renamed default SSID 3x over course of last several days trying to re-set everything. Still no access.

I appreciate the ideas. I hv heard some people mention problems with W7 and the older routers... maybe time for new router?

You should not really need a new router for this issue, but it’s often the kind if reason I use for buying new.

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

I guess that's the value proposition right? Do I keep tweaking settings and perhaps get it going in a day or three or five...or do I go spend $50 and have it up and running in an hour. (or do I sit in a chair wired / chained to modem? lol).

I do appreciate your guys taking the time to give me some ideas. One more thing - does it matter that the wireless network was orignally set up with another laptop?
Thks

Re: Cannot set up wireless with WGR614 v6

Thanks guys. Picked up an N300 and 15 minutes later the house is wireless again. It's good to be free - LOL.

Thanks again for trying - Jim
