DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

Hey all, I need some help here, I have a faithful DG834Nv1 adsl router which is now sadly giving me issues with it's wireless network. This issues requires me to power off and on the router to get it working, the DG834N has started to get poor throughput on wireless also, so I do not think my DG834Nv1 has much life left in this world.

Now I plan to move to infinity within a month so I am not wanting to buy an adsl router, so I would like to get an Netgear WNDR4500 setup and also ensure that I have a wireless network that is functioning.

Now my plan is to put the DG834N into modem mode and use the WNDR4500 for the main wired and wireless network, however I'm not entirely sure how to go about this.

I know about the hidden page
http://192.168.0.1/mode.htm
for setting the mode

But I am clueless on what to do after that, has anybody done this before or know of any decent guides the can point me too.

I do have a static IP address provided to me by my ISP.

Many thanks for any replies.

All you have to do is put the 834 into bridge mode. Now it is just a modem. Set the 4500 to auto DHCP.

If you configure the DG as modem mode, next is to setup 4500 with PPP authentication and ISP are expect to use PPPoE because if your ISP will use PPPoA , 4500 will NOT work.

So if ISP uses PPPoE, then under 4500 router gui, go to basic setting and choose method type as "other" when you choose your internet requires login.

supply correct PPPoE account user and pass and should connect

Re: DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

Damn my UK ISP uses PPPoA, I'll just have to wait until I get Fibre Infinity 80/20 to get it completely setup, at least I can get some of the 4500 setup before the move, just can't use it. I Was hoping I could pair it with the DG834N in the meantime.
Thanks for your help.

Re: DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

In that case use DG as router and 4500 as access point instead

Re: DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

Out of interest (as I am likewise struggling to get a WNDR4500 + DG834N combo working), why won't the N900 work with PPPoA ... which is what my ISP uses?

Re: DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

I've re-read this thread several times now and get the feeling that my WNDR4500 + Dg834N in modem mode + PPPoA used by my ISP won't work for some reason - so can anyone in simple lay terms:

1. Explain to me as a non-techie why it wont work
2. Advise what my options are, e.g. Do I simply need a different brand or model of modem or is there a software workaround?

Re: DG834N modem only and WNDR4500

Yes, because in the WNDR4500 manual it states that only PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP are the only supported ISP encapsulation.

Just about all routers in consumer level only support PPPoE (ppp over ethernet ) over PPPoA (pop over ATM)
