Ethernet Connection good but WiFi not working

Hi ladies and gents,

I've got a Netgear R6400 router that is about a year or so old (maybe 2). About 2 hours ago the internet went out and I thought it may be an issue with my provider. Well, after taking a bit to look at it, I noticed that the power, internet, and port 4 lights were on (P4 is the hard line for my PC). I jumped on my PC and the ethernet connection is running perfectly fine, however, I have not wifi capabilities. It's not pushing out a signal at all. I'm currently on 45 minutes worth of hold time with netgear but figured I may get a faster response on here.

Anyone have any idea why my ethernet is working but the wifi just went out suddenly?

UPDATE: Netgear customer support wanted $89 to push a new signal to my router so I will be troubleshooting this directly based on what happens with this post.

Re: Ethernet Connection good but WiFi not working

I found the issue quickly upon reading the manual. It was a cat25 issue...

A bit of back story. Just after the internet went down, I observed my wife's cat walk from behind the TV. After finding the issue this is my determination...

Cat25 issue: My wife's 25lbs cat stepped on the router's 'wifi on/off' button and turned the wifi off. I held the wifi button and its now working. Thanks for the help!

   Hardware version (Plain/[v1], "v2", ...)?  Firmware version?

What do the other LED indicators on the router indicate?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for "Table 1. LED
and button descriptions".  Did you press the "WiFi On/Off button with
LED"?

I believe it's a V1 since the model number literally only says R6400, however, I'm no expert on these things... not even a novice. As far as firmware goes, I suppose I'm still using the same firmware that it had when I bought/installed it. I haven't manually updated anything.

What do the other LED indicators on the router indicate?

The other LEDs do not indicate anything. The 2.5g, 5g, wifi { ((.)) }, are all unlit.

I'll check out the site but the only steps I've taken so far are unplugging both the router and modem and letting them reset then plugging them back in.

Yup.  Netgear adds a version suffix only when "v2" appears.

"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.

"unlit" _does_ indicate _something_.

The (unspecified) modem is not involved in this problem.  The router
may retain a radio-disabled/enabled status through a simple restart.

There are ways to disable the wireless-network radios in the
management web site interface, but those are much harder to change
accidentally compared with the "WiFi On/Off button with LED".  Look for
"Control the Wireless Radios" in the User Manual.

Many people can get the same job done using a much smaller cat.

This is one reason why some people like to wall mount their routers.

Cats have been known to lie down on a warm router. Not only does this run the risk of dead wifi – you are not the first to report that – it can also "fluff up" the router. leading to overheating.

This is not so easy if they have to climb the wall to get at the router.
