I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

I am in serious need of help. I have no clue about routers! Let me explain my situation. We had a terrible lightning storm on Sunday and had several strikes damage some items including our router and modem. We had our ISP come out on Monday and they checked our modem (it was bad) so they gave us a new one and checked our connections.

I purchased a very inexpensive router and it was terrible, so I returned it and purchased the WNDR3700 V3. The connection is slightly better, but the download and upload speeds are terrible. We had a very old router and our speeds were fantastic, so not sure what is going on.

I live in the 2 story town home. The router/modem are downstairs and the computers are in the room directly upstairs. *Same setup we used to have*

We called ISP and they had us check the modem speeds and everything was fine.

I e-mailed Netgear and there suggestion was to change the MTU. I tried 1492, 1400, 1358, and 1300. Some were slightly better than others.

I then called Netgear. Here is what they had me do.

First, he had me go to advanced wireless settings and change the fragmentation lengths on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz to 2305 and the CTR/RTS values on both to 2306.

When the speed was worse he told me to update the firmware and call back. I purchased the router yesterday and it updated itself.

I called back and received another tech person that had me change to channel 11 and said to wait a few days. She said that as long as I can open webpage that it is working. I find this ridiculous!!!! I am not just looking to open up a web page.

We use the wireless to connect 2 IMacs, 2 iPhones, PS3, Wii, and an Apple TV.

I ran a speed test on testmy.net and here is what I got (this is with the computer plugged into the router downstairs as advised by tech support):

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

What speeds are you getting when connected directly to the modem? If you turn off the wireless and ensure that only this one computer is using the router do your speed tests change? Since a lightning strike started all of this and your ISP replaced the modem, did they check the outside wiring for lightning damage also? Have you tried any other speed test sites?

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

I removed the wireless and plugged it directly into the modem.

On Bright House Speed Test (my ISP) it reads:

9.63 Mbps for DL and 0.97 Mbps for UL.

Results from testmy.net:

I also tried speediest.net:

Ping 18ms
DL 9.SS Mbps
UL 0.97 Mbps

I know that the ISP checked a white connector box in our garage and the connection in the room, but not sure if he checked any outside connections.

The numbers I am getting when attached to the modem I believe are normal.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

Could you log in to the router and set the WiFi to G only and throttle it to 54? Unless all your devices are N capable it can cause erratic behavior to use N on the router. Since you have already worked with support for both your ISP and Netgear I am going to skip over the cabling troubleshooting parts and startup sequences.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

I can go into the router and I know how to change the channel, but not sure what you mean by throttle it to 54.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

There should be an operating mode in wireless that lets you select the speed it is capable of. If you can try it out with it set to 54 and mode to G it could help with the speeds.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

Actually, I do not know how to change this router to g only. Could you tell me where I can do that? Thanks so much for your help so far.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

I changed it to 54 and could not find a place to change it to g only. Tried another speed test and it is terrible again.

Re: I need of help with my DL/UL Speeds

Perhaps I am missing it.
Did you also test the speed by connecting to one of the LAN ports on the 3700 and running a speed test? (disable your wireless on your laptop when you do this).

Testing like this now would help point us towards the 3700's WAN layer or just a WIFI issue.

When testing do you see a lot of packet loss?
