My router stopped being able to access my external HD

I've got a Western Digital MyBook external hard drive. It's 2 to 3 years old. It is connected, via USB, to my WNDR 3700 router. Yesterday, it suddenly dropped off of my network. I think the HD is failing, but wasn't exactly sure what was going on. I called Western Digital today, and they suggested I disconnect it from the router, and connect it directly to one of my PCs. I did, and am able to access data from the HD.

My question is, why am I able to access it this way, but am unable to access it through the router?

hmmm try to connect again your HDD to the router

open www.routerlogin.net, go to basic settings under USB Settings check if your HDD is detected. and btw what is the file format of your HDD?

and last try to check USB Settings under Advance- make sure that

Enable any USB Device connected to the USB port is set yo YES

Hdd often go to sleep and some take longer to wake. Router does not allow it enough time to wake. A directory refresh can sometimes bring it back. For hdd, gargoyle and maybe ddwrt may work better.

A dedicated NAS is highly recommended.
