Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

I used to use Netgear's Parental Control feature, which worked in conjuction with OpenDNS.  I recently upgraded to the latest firmware, 1.0.2.96.  Now Netgear genie’s “Basic/home page” reports “Parental Controls Status: Not Enabled.” If I click on that tile, or on Netgear genie’s “Parental Controls” link, I used to be taken to an OpenDNS login screen: https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php . But now I’m taken to http://www.netgear.com/lpc, which does not mention OpenDNS. My router, WNDR3700v4, is not listed as being supported by the options http://www.netgear.com/lpc does mention, “Disney Smart Parental Controls” and “Netgear genie app.” I am able to sign in using https://netgear.opendsn.com/sign_in.php , but https://welcome.opendns.com/ says I’m not using OpenDNS.  How can I restore the OpenDNS parental controls I used to have?

Hi @G_Lozada,

Please make sure that you have done a factory reset after the firmware update and check if the issue persist after re-configuring everything including the LPC (Live Parental Control).

Re: Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

Hello, Dexter; thanks for your suggestion.  Unfortunately, I performed a factory reset (using a paper clip to depress the button on the bottom of the router) and there is no change in behavior.  When I click on "Parental Controls" I am still taken to http://www.netgear.com/lpc instead of to OpenDNS.  You asked me to reconfigure everything including Live Parental Controls, but I can't get to the OpenDNS Live Parental Controls via the router, so how could I reconfigure it?

(By the way, there was a typo in one of the URL's in my original message; I meant to write, "I am able to sign in using https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php ...."  But there seems to be nothing there that needs to be reconfigured; and anyway the problem is that I can't get to OpenDNS directly from Netgear Genie.)

Re: Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

By the way, I just noticed there is a third parental control option on http://www.netgear.com/lpc (besides Circle with Disney and the Netgear genie app, neither of which can work with my router according to their documentation such as http://www.netgear.com/landings/circle/ and https://kb.netgear.com/24686/Which-NETGEAR-home-router-models-can-I-manage-using-NETGEAR-genie-app), at the bottom of the www...../lpc page: "download PC" for Netgear genie.  I've always interfaced with my router by going to routerlogin.net in a browser, and that interface says "Netgear genie."  Should I now be interfacing with my router instead by using a Netgear genie program I ought to download from http://www.netgear.com/lpc?  Or would that download change what happens when I visit routerlogin.net in a browser?

Speaking of additional software, the article https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227987607-How-to-Enable-Disable-Live-Parental-Controls refers to a Netgear Live Parental Controls Management utility.  I don't think I ever had to download that before (when LPC was working on my system).  Windows Control Panel's Remove Programs doesn't show any installed software by that name.  The support article says I can "download the Management Utility program from www.netgear.com/opendns" but when I click on that link I get "Page Not Found."

Re: Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

Hi @G_Lozada,

To clarify, if you have setup and used LPC (Live Parental Controls) before, there are two ways for you to manage it. Either via the browser (https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php) or the the Genie apps/programs (PC, macOS, iOS, Android). The link on the router UI will only redirect you to the page to download the Genie apps/programs.

If you registered with OpenDNS  and used your credentials to setup LPC then you should still be able to do so via the Genie apps/programs for your preferred platform (iOS, Android, macOS, PC)

Re: Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

Thank you very much for your message.  The problem is now fixed; here's how I did it.

Upon further inspection, I found the the Windows desktop version of Netgear Genie on my computer.  I ran it, accessed Parental Controls, enabled them, and this got parental controls working again.  (I checked that www.internetbadguys.com was blocked.)

However, then accessing my router from a browser using routerlogin.net didn’t work any more (it wouldn't accept my credentials), and my wireless went down, and it turned out all my custom router configurations were gone; so I should have done Parental Controls with the Desktop Genie right after the factory reset, before re-entering my router customizations.  (Maybe the factory reset wasn't needed after all?)

I turned the router and my computer off and back on.  That got wireless working.  Then, without the desktop Netgear genie running, I was able to log into the router from a browser using 192.168.1.1.  Then, once I logged out of that router interface, I was able to log in to it again via routerlogin.net, and re-customize my settings.  If I now click on Parental Control from routerlogin.net, it takes me to the OpenDNS login screen https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php, just as it used to.

What I still don't understand is the interaction between the Netgear genie reached using routerlogin.net from a browser and the Netgear genie desktop program.  Clearly, after the firmware update, I needed to use the Netgear genie desktop program to get Parental Controls working again.  However, using the Netgear genie desktop program erased the custom settings I had made using the Netgear genie reached using routerlogin.net from a brower.  The two Netgear genies have different capabilities, and while for me the ones in the browser-access one are most important, it might be nice to occasionally use the desktop interface; but I'm scared to do that now, because of how it messed up the browser-interface genie earlier.  Where can I learn about the interaction between the two genies?

Re: Parental Controls no longer goes to OpenDNS, no longer work

Hi @G_Lozada,

The NETGEAR Genie app/program that requires installation for your devices (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android) can be considered as supplementary since most of it's functions are found on the router UI that is accessible via the browser (routerlogin.net/192.168.1.1). The links for their manuals are linked below.
