Periodically dropped modem connection
I've been having a fairly frequent issue for a while now across multiple modems (all DM111Ps) and routers (previously a WNDR3700 and now an R6300) and two different ISPs whereby my router loses its connection to my modem. It happens on average around 4 times a week, possibly a bit more often.
The basic gist of the problem is as follows:
- The modem status light on the router turns orange
- The modem's intranet web portal becomes inaccessable
- The router's intranet web portal tells me it has no internet connection
- No new outbound connections can be established
- All active connections remain active, although if they time out like normal if they stop being used
- The only way to re-establish a normal internet connection again is to power cycle the modem
It's pretty inconvenient, although mostly a low-grade inconvenience so I've been putting up with it for a few years. I'm just wondering what I can do to make it stop happening.

Re: Periodically dropped modem connection
Oh, additional info:
The lights on the modem itself don't change while this occurs. Everything stays green and it still shows traffic going through.

Re: Periodically dropped modem connection
Looks like both my router and modem are already set to my optimal MTU - 1492.

Re: Periodically dropped modem connection
@Zaha Not intermittent when you direct connect your computer to the modem? If it's stable, have you updated the firmware of your routers? Which router versions are you using? Who is your ISP?
Looking forward to your response.

Re: Periodically dropped modem connection
No, I used to have my computer connected directly to the modem and my connection isn't intermittent. I did find regularly that I couldn't access the modem's browser interface though, my browser would just be stuck waiting for a response - and that required a modem restart to fix as well.
The router's firmware version is V1.0.2.70_1.0.50 and the modem's firmware version is V2.00.25.
I've had two different ISPs while experiencing this issue - the first was TPG and the second, my current one, is Dodo.

Re: Periodically dropped modem connection
first, upgrade to the .78 f/w, see my instructions and follow them, below.
second, find the MAC address of your computer that works well when direct connected and use that MAC on the CLONE MAC ADDRESS field under INTERNET
third, check the DNS setting under INTERNET and under SECONDARY DNS use 8.8.8.8
please report back the results.
==================
FIRMWARE UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS:
When upgrading the f/w please make sure you follow these steps and follow the
instructions:
To Install
Note: Do not upgrade the firmware using a wireless connection. Please perform
firmware upgrade with "wired" or Ethernet connection only.
Write down all the settings which you changed from the default values, since you
will need to reenter them manually.
Download and UNZIP the firmware to a convenient place such as your desktop:
(Use the version of your choice. Latest V1.0.2.78 seems to be working pretty good
for most people.)
Connect you computer to the router with a LAN cable, do NOT do this via wireless.
Log in to the router using a Web browser. The URL is http://www.routerlogin.net
If you are having a DNS problem, use the LAN IP address directly, eg.192.168.1.1
(default) or whatever you set it to.
Click ADVANCED tab > Administration > Backup Settings: backup up your settings so
you can recover them later if needed
Click REVERT TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS
note: this will set the base IP to 192.168.1.1, you might need to disable
and enable your network adapter to pick up a new IP address
Click ADVANCED tab > Administration > Firmware Upgrade: Click Browse and find the
firmware file you just downloaded.
Click UPLOAD: Do not interrupt the upgrade while the router does this step.
After the upload is complete, wait another 60 seconds.
Click ADVANCED tab > Administration > Backup Settings
Click REVERT TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS
Restore your backup configuration from the saved backup.
Power off the router, wait 60 seconds, power router back on.
If the router still misbehaves, follow the instructions above, but instead of
restoring the configuration file, Rekey any configuration changes you may have
made.
Important Note:
1. The upgrade process is completed when the on screen progress bar completes. If
power LED light turns amber and blinking, power cycle the router. Wait 60 seconds
after the upgrade progress bar says it's complete to actually finish the upgrade
process.
2. If the upgrade progress bar on web GUI doesn't display correctly during
firmware upgrade, you can still check the status using Power LED. The Power LED
should be blinking (amber) during firmware upgrade. After firmware upgrade is
done and boots up the system, it changes to steady amber color.
Please DO NOT power off or reboot the device during firmware upgrade, otherwise,
it may result to a corrupt firmware and cause the device not to work.
Wait 60 seconds after you "think" the upgrade has completed before making any
changes or accessing the internet. This will allow any internal software updating
to complete.
Then go to QOS settings and make sure Enable WMM is checked.
Under Wireless Settings
-I have selected channel 157 but you may need a different channel
-I have "Up To 1300mbs" selected
-Use WPA2-PSK(AES)
-and Enable SSID broadcast
under Advanced Wireless Settings
-Make sure you are using Long Preamble and that your adapter is either set for LP
or Auto
Below WPS Settings
-make sure Perfornance Boost is checked
After making these changes, test to see if your problem(s) have been resolved. If
they have you can now make selective changes to these settings.
If your problems are solved try changing PREAMBLE to SHORT and see if it still
works.
