R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Since the last firmware update, my [remote] access via FTP (Internet) is not passing the login. I've verified the password, changed the password, removed the password requirement - the authentication always fails.

Hardware VersionR6250

Firmware VersionV1.0.4.12_10.1.15

I've even tried a different FTP client program. I always get:

Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Insecure server, it does not support FTP over TLS.
Command: USER admin
Response: 331 Password please.
Command: PASS ******
Response: 421 Login incorrect.
Error: Could not connect to server

As I say, this seems to have coincided with my firmware uprgrade to V1.0.4.12_10.1.15

Using the same credentials, I have no trouble getting to the Router Admin pages remotely. So I know the password is correct..Every other function of the USB storage works. Here is a screenshot of my setup.R6250.JPG

Many thanks for any help,

Shimon.

Hi @ShimonDI,

1. Please make sure you do a factory reset after the firmware update.

2. Does reverting to the previous firmware resolve the issue?

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Where do I get the previous firmware from?

One posting I saw recommended rebooting the modem. I will try that in the next few days.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Hello Dexter, and thanks for your attention to this.

I have done the following: downgraded the firmware = no change.

Rebooted the router AND the modem = now I'm getting:

Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server

Sorry, Dexter. I don't see any new message in here, aside from your telling me to look in my inbox.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

I have the exact same problem with ftp login failures.  Same router (r6250).  Also happened to me after updating to new firmware version (1.0.4.12.   ).  Using Windows 10 OS.  Using Filezilla to FTP access usb hard drive on router via readyshare.  Have a dyndns address which acknowledges when i "check status".  Set up three shared folders on usb hard drive "music", "pictures", "videos"....all no username, no password.

Solutions tried:

1.  under usb checked enable box for remote ftp access using my dyndns address with password protection box checked, port 21:

With filezilla set up for ftp, port 21, username "admin" and the password set up in the router which does allow access to the router

I get an error error 421 "login incorrect"

2.  After unchecking the password protection box for remote usb FTP access to readyshare, filezilla able to access all 3 shared folders

both to read and write (this is very dangerous and only did this to see if it would work......and it did)

3. Made one othe readyshare shared folders admi/admin protected in router under usb tab.

Filezilla UNABLE to access any FTP folders giving same error 421 "login incorrect"

Removing admin/admin protection from that one file and leaving password protection box under remote ftp unchecked

allows Filzilla to access the files again.

I believe this is a coding error in the most recent firmware update for the Netgear R6250 router because the user name and password i use to access the router works just fine.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

That is correct; it's a firmware bug, as confirmed in the Netgear lab.

The Netgear technician gave me [back] V1.0.4.8_10.1.13 and that works.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Now, it's something new. My ISP changed my address, so a reboot of the modem and router were required. The USB settings in the Admin section were updated automatically with the new external address. As experience has indicated, I did not update the firmware.  However, when trying to FTP to the USB (with the new address), I get "Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server". This happens with any attempt regardless of which PC I'm using. It tries twice and fails twice with the above message. I have no idea why this is happening. (HTTP access works fine, as it always did.)

"Connection refused" normally means that no one is listening at the
specified port at the specified address.  (Or such access is blocked
somehow.)

> [...] when trying to FTP to the USB (with the new address), [...]

You're trying to use FTP to connect to the _router_ (which includes
the attached USB storage), but a wrong address could explain a
"connection refused" complaint.  Can you get FTP to work from a computer
on your LAN to the router using the router's LAN address (typically
192.168.1.1)?  How, exactly, did you determine this new address?

If FTP access fails from inside and outside your LAN, then there may
be a way to verify that the FTP server is actually running on the
router.  It's a little complex, involving enabling Telnet access to the
router, then using the router's command-line interface to explore what
the router is doing.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Thanks for your reply.

As you suggested, I tried a local FTP connection (10.0.0.1) and got exactly the same thing ("ECONNREFUSED"). The reason I know the external address is correct is because it was automatically plugged into the USB advanced settings after I rebooted the router, AND the HTTPS (via Internet) works perfectly with that same address; I can see all the contents of the USB drive attached to the router, and download them.

I'm sorry - I have no idea how to Telnet to the router or use its command-line interface.

Shimon.

Re: R6250 USB FTP (Internet) login failures

Rebooted the router. Everything is working. Seems as if I needed to reboot it twice after rebooting the modem.
