R6400 - external hard drive access incredibly slow
I recently set up my new R6400 with an external hard drive, a 4TB Western Digital My Book formatted with a single HFS+ partition, which I want to use for networked file storage and Time Machine backups for my Mac. The router can recognize the drive no problem, and I can access it from my laptop, so the basic setup seems to be working. The problem is speed -- even reading the file directories is so slow that the operation just times out. I can see the top-level folders when I browse the drive, but when I try to drill down, Finder just shows the little spinner.
I really don't know if the issue the router or my laptop (which is a 2011 Macbook Air, old but not completely antiquated). Any ideas as to what might be going on?
UPDATE: I did some more investigation, and I now suspect that the issue is related to SMB filesharing on my Mac. See, for example: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/439085-smb-share-slow-to-load-in-finder-on-macs
I will keep experimenting to see if I can come up with fix...
