Regular high ping times to router

WNDR3700v2, running 1.0.0.12, been in place for quite some time, no real issues as I reboot it on a timer every 3am.

Just recently I started getting VOIP issues that runs over our corporate VPN (I am remote). I tracked this down to errant ping times to the router. Minutes of <1ms, followed by 5 seconds of 2-400ms. This was over 2.4ghz.

I changed to 5ghz and it is better, but still seeing a jump to 40-100ms on a similar timeframe/schedule.

I looked into it this morning, and found pretty well all devices in the house other than my printer and phone and Sprint AirRave (booster) were disconnected. The AirRave has been in place for a year or more.

In the last week or so I have started adding a couple of Netgear gigabit switches to the network and added a couple of devices, but this shouldn't affect things in this manner - should it?

Suggestions on how to track this down? I don't see any barrage of messages in the router log.

What can cause these intermittent (but regular) high ping times?

Thx!

Re: Regular high ping times to router

Remove the switches and test.

I had 3 of those plastic white cases (POS) eight port netgear switches go bad.

Did they ever fix the AIRAVE? If your network went down the sprint phones stayed connected to the Airave and you had No service.

I canceled my service because of that. You cannot even make a 911, also you cannot stop others from using the 3g data if they are close to your home.

Re: Regular high ping times to router

Hmmm. Good idea on the switches. They are 8 and 5 port blue metal case ones though. But still.

Without the airave I basically have no cell service anyway in the house. Would need to step away 100 yds. to get 1 bar and be out of it's range. No other houses in range.

Will let you know.

Re: Regular high ping times to router

The blue switches in metal case have worked quite well. The reboot at 3am, is done via timer toggling power? The router may be failing. I would pickup another and see if problem goes away.

Is airave between modem and router or after router?

before replacing try factory defaults and re-entering configs

Re: Regular high ping times to router

Yes, reboot is on a plugin timer, basically turns it off for an hour at 3am. Solved 99% of issues. Airave connects direct to the router using cat5e. How would you put it between modem and router.

Re: Regular high ping times to router

airave after router is how I used mine.

I would consider replacing the router if you tried a reset to default.

Re: Regular high ping times to router

So I wrote some code to run a steady ping and pull the latency and stick in a database, then run a query to look for patterns. Time stamp is pretty close to the second, (just realized my code is slightly buggy if I get multiple pings >999ms in the same snapshot - currently 100 pings). But no worries as all below 200ms for now. So you can see it is usually every 3 minutes or thereabouts. WTH runs every 3 minutes!?!?!?!?

select * from Util.Ping
where latency >30
order by %id desc
