Router doesnt recognize external USB hard drive
i have a netgear WNDR4500v2 router. It has two USB ports that can be used to share an external hard drive. When I plug the USB HDD into the USB port on the routere, the light on the front for the USB prot does not illuminate. When trying to create a network folder from the UI, I get an error no disk. The drive is recognized if I connect it directly to my surface and a small usb drive is recognized when I connect it to the router. I took a seagate HDD back and purchased on from the compatibiliy list. I am getting the same results with this drve. it is a WD MY Book 1130 3TB 3.5 WDBACW0030HBK-00. Any help to get this drive working conneced to the router would be great. I have reviewed all availble documentation and nothing in the docs help. I have searched the community and have found no help. And of course, I puchased the router in 2014 so netgear is not interested in getting on a call and helping. I am at the point of throwing the router in the lake and purchasing a new router that is not a netgear.

Welcome to the community, @kylelyons
Make sure that it uses one of the following file systems.
NTFS with compression format enabled
Ext2, Ext3, Ext4
If the same thing happens, try to reflas/reinstall the firmware of the router then do a factory reset.
After resetting, configure the router settings manually and reconnect the drive.
