Router no longer talking to modem

Istalled, by Comcast Cable Co.,WNR2000 & Motorola Modem 3 yrs. ago. to set up wireless. No idea what he did but it worked till July 3rd when I contacted Comcast to re-establish from vacation mode. Modem is fine & internet only works when hooked up directly from modem to computer. Been in touch with Netgear every day sinxe 7/3 trying to get router to work, got directions, but no sure what the heck I'm doing. I have Netgear ifo. installed on laptop, IP,Subnet,Default,Pref. DNS, Alternate, Port address. Have no idea what any of these numbers or names mean. Disconected, reconnected, what can I do? Went to BestBuy thinking that perhaps something wrong with router or laptop & told he couldn't find anything wrong. Comcast Cable now outsources router service & asks $159 for contract to establish remote access to my computer but no guarantee that all will work.

Re: Router no longer talking to modem

1. turn off the cable modem and unplug ethernet cable
2. wait for few min (20min)
3. turn on the cable modem only and do NOT plug any ethernet cable
4. wait until all the light up on cable modem
5. ONLY after all the light is up. hook up a router behind the cable modem
6. you should able to get public IP from the ISP and it will show up in the router status when you login the router.

** remove the BATTERY from the cable modem if built-in and follow from #1~

Re: Router no longer talking to modem

Thank you.......tried & didn't work so thought maybe something wrong with my laptop. I will return with another laptop but meanwhile I brought the router back home with me & wonder if I can try the router with the cable modem I have even though it's not comcast cable but Time-Warner, & try to set up to see if it works. Will I screw up anything on my modem or laptop?
