Slower speeds from switch than direct connect with modem/router

Sorry not very literate on all of this. I will try to give as much information as possible.

I have a 1Gig subscription with Centurylink.

I have their router / modem - Model C3000Z

I bought the GS316 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch.

I am trying to run Cat 6 ethernet cable to many locations throughout my house and garage in the walls.

Before I started to place the lines, I decided to test the cable and connection with the new switch and router / modem.

If I direct connect to router / modem, my pc will get around 900 Mbps download, around 200 Mbps upload, ping 2 for a speed test.

If I go from wall socket direct to switch, then to router / modem. Then I run cable lines from the switch directly to my pc, I get around 47 both for down and up load, ping 3.

Why is the switch slowing the speeds down? The cables are working fine when directly connected to Modem / Router without the switch. However, if i add the switch in the mix, it slows down worse than Wi-Fi.

Any suggestions?

You need to go 

router/modem------->switch----->then devices. 

From the way you described it, you're going switch------>modem/router
