Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

Hello again Smiley Happy

Has anyone successfully used a WNDR3700 as a main base and an airport extreme or express as a repeater etc?

I can get the two to work together o.k providing I don't use any security, however; as soon as I enable WEP 128bit for both nuits, the airport does not connect to the WNDR3700.

Is there a reason why the WNDR3700 is limited to WEP only?

At this stage I have not yet tried airport as main and 3700 as repeater

Thanks again for any tips

Regards

Cat

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

router only support WEP ONLY

very few manufacture uses WPA, WPA2 for repeat in "router"

WPS is more used since it is easier and constantly changes the key and chan.

although this will not work with airport and limits WEP for WDS

thanks for the fast reply jmizoguchi Smiley Happy

I'm not sure I quite understand your response with regards to WEP. Are you saying that if I set WEP security on both 3700 and the Extreme, it still will not work, and I should not ever expect it to? If this is the case, is this a difference in the WEP format between the two routers?

Thanks again

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

sorry, maybe I'm not explaining it properly Smiley Happy

The 3700 supports WEP 128 on WDS

The Extreme supports WEP 128 on WDS

When I set them both to WEP 128 and configure for WDS, they do not connect

When I set them to no security, they do connect

Am I correct in expecting them to be able to connect?

Thanks again for any helpSmiley Happy

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

Yes, using the 3700 as a master for WDS is how I have been trying to do it, but without success

I've also been trying to connect to the 3700 (main) using the Extreme in "join a network" mode, and although it does connect successfully (green light), any client connecting to the 3700 (wifi or lan) cannot see the Extreme's lan clients. This appears to be a bug with the Extreme, as the same thing happens when the Extreme joins a network created by another Extreme or Express. In "extend" or "WDS" mode, the Extreme's lan port clients can be seen fine

Interestingly though, using the "join method" the 3700 clients can see the Extremes USB connected hard disk and access the data fine

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

I agree again Smiley Happy

Unfortunately this is why I had to revert to the WNDR3700.

and

http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2158515&tstart=15&start=30

It sounds like all the MC340 Extreme units are affected with their current and only firmware. I returned mine but I still have my older gigabit model which works fine for both 5ghz N and USB hard disk access

However, so far with the wndr3700 on it's own, I am experiencing transfer speeds and coverage far better than I ever got from any of my airports at any band, location or configuration (independant or extended etc.)

If only I could get the two products to link together with some security, I'd be more than happy Smiley Happy

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

I had HUGE issues with this over the weekend.

I was trying to set up a WNDR3700 and a Time Capsule in WDS mode. The big problem was that the WEP password required by the Time Capsule is in a different format to the WEP password on the 3700.

The Apple one requires 13 ASCII chars (which it translates into a 26 char hex string) and the 3700 uses the standard 10 hex chars.

What I found out is that the Apple WEP is equivalent to the hex you get if you enter a pass phrase for 128bit WEP.

So all you have to do is use this website - http://www.andrewscompanies.com/tools/wep.asp and entry the 13 char Apple WEP password into the custom field and it will give you the equivalent 26 char hex code to add straight to the key fields in the Netgears wireless security page.

It sounds complicated - so just remember...

Apple WEP = 128bit WEP hex

Hope that helps.

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

that is good thought

didn't think apple uses ASCII for WEP.. that would make sense
netgear do use HEX

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

Hey Catmandog/jmizoguchi/stateless.
Please help Dudes.
I have an Airport Express, Netgear WNDR 3700 and Playstation 3.
My 3700 is my main router in the loft.
My Express is downstairs in the kitchen and I use it for Air tunes.
My PS3 is in the living room downstairs and is accessing the 3700 wirelessly.

I want to use the Express as a bridge between the two, while keeping the Air Tunes function, to boost the signal (between 3700 & PS3).

I am not that clued into how it all works so if one of you could hook me up with a step-by-step, I would really appreciate it. I tried messing around with the wep settings and the PS3 did see a second, and higher reception, version of my network but I could not connect to it.

Cheers Guys

Thanks jmizoguchi.
I had already got that far but when I plug my Express into an outlet, between my Router & PS3, it does not boost the signal on my ps3, it just stays the same. Where am I going wrong?

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

am I incorrect in saying that by plugging the Express somewhere in between the 3700, in the loft, and the Ps3, in the livingroom downstairs, I should get a boosted signal on the pS3?

I am using WPA not WEP, is that the problem?

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

you can only use WEP on repeating. you are asking a question based on signal you did not see. you need to move thing around and see http://metageek.net/products/inssider use utility and survey

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

I have moved it all over the house but the pS3 signal does not seem to change. How can I test the express to see if it is actually increasing the 3700 signal?

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

Hi Catmandog,

Would you mind providing some of your settings on the Airport Express? The settings on the 3700 are pretty straightforward. For example, is the Express set up as WDS remote? Of particular interest are the Airport Utility settings in:

Airport|Wireless tab
Airport|WDS tab
Internet|TCP/IP tab
Internet|Internet Connection tab

You seem to be one of the very few that have the Airport Express working under WDS to extend a non-apple router.

Hi Catmandog, I am about to try and set up similar products and just wondered if you ever got this to work or if this is a non starter.

Any pointers welcome

Re: Using WNDR3700 as WDS Main with Apple Airport Extreme as repeater

Hi, I am new here and I need to wake this topic again.
Yesterday I tried to extend my WNDR3700v1 router with my Apple Airport Express Base Station in WDS mode, but couldnt make it work.

Tonight I will try it without WEP protection just to see if they connect to each other at least. Then will try to play with the MAC addresses to see which one is correct.

Quick question: in the WNDR3700 config should I use the Repeater Function menu and set it as Base Station and enter the MAC address of the Airport Express BS?
