WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

I have a new WNDR3700v2 router that I purchased on Apr.8/11. It is running the newest firmware and consistently drops the WAN connection. It may run ok for 2 hours then I get an error message that I don't have an internet connection. My old router, D-Link WBR-2310 didn't give me this trouble. Ideas?

Thanks.

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

My WNDR3700 (version 1) has recently started doing this. At first I thought only the wireless was dropping out, but my wired connection is dropping too. A power cycle on the router brings everything back up, but it will undoubtedly go out again.

I thought this would be an excellent upgrade from the linksys wrt54gs that I had been using for years, but now I'm back to using it again.

Yep, I have the same issue also with a WNDR4000 but someone suggested to check for channel interference. I will try this tongith but not so sure it will address this issue. If anyone solves it please let us know as I am getting pretty frustrated.

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

I finally decided to try updating my WNDR3700 to this Openwrt build. I haven't had a dropout in the last two days and everything seems to be going great so far. I'll reply if I experience any issues.

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

Suggestions which were made to me did not work so I am guessing it is buggy software. Let us know your experiences with the openwrt firmware as I may have to go that route as well or just go back to linksys.

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

I too have experienced this. Everything will be ok then I have no internet. the internet light blinks on the router as if it is working. If I unplug from the router and go direct to my laptop the connection is perfect. I have to restart the router to get the connection again. After reading this it def sounds like a glitch in the firmware

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

I was having this problem 4 to 5 times a day. On someones advise from this forum I downgraded to WNDR3700-V1.0.4.68NA a week and a half ago and have not had one single issue 🙂 I also used this procedure given to me for the firmware installation.

Router Firmware Upgrade procedure.
1. Log into the router using the current Username and Password.
2. Under the "Maintenance" section, go to the "Backup Settings" page.
3. Click "Erase" in the "Revert to factory default settings" area.
4. After the router asks for the Username and Password, power cycled the router.
5. Log back into the router using the default Username and Password (see above).
6. Under the "Maintenance" section, go to the "Router Upgrade" page.
7. Click "Browse" in the "Locate and select the upgrade file on your hard disk" area.
8. Locate and select the downloaded firmware file and click "Open", then click "Update".
9. Do absolutely nothing while this is taking place!
10. After the firmware is changed, log back into the router using the default Username and Password.
11. Under the "Maintenance" section, go to the "Backup Settings" page.
12. Click "Erase" in the "Revert to factory default settings" area.
13. Log back into the router using the default Username and Password.
14. Manually configure the router using the settings you saved in the text file you created earlier.
Now when you go to the "Maintenance" section and the "Router Status" page, the "Firmware Version" should reflect the firmware change.

Finally, power cycle the modem and router. Unplugged both. First plug the power into the modem and allow it to finish syncing. Then, plug the power into the router. Give the router a couple extra minutes to finish syncing with the modem.

Its now April 24, 2011 and still no update, wonder if Netgear knows the longer they take release a quality patch. The more they make their competition look like the better choice. (simply tired of rebooting my router 5 to 6 times a day)

Did you file a report at my.netgear.com?

Sometimes getting problems fixed is a bit like replacing poor quality politicians, if you dont vote then you dont change anything.

Trust me on this, The other consumer-level competition isnt far off from netgears mark :P.

I hope that Netgear developers are working on a new firmware for the WNDR3700-V1 router too (not just for WNDR3700-V2) because that latest firmware also has the WAN-connection drop out issue.

I hope that Netgear developers are also working on a new firmware fix for the WNDR3700-V1 router (not just only the WNDR3700-V2 router). Because the WNDR3700-V1 latest firmware V1.0.7.98NA has this WAN-dropout problem also! It loses DNS name resolution and thus makes it seem like WAN connection dropped but in reality if you ping direct ipaddresses, it will ping successful. It's the DNS name resolution going bad inside the router (it does not lose connectivity to the actual DNS servers by pinging their ipaddresses directly). This is what I have found out thus far and I did submit a trouble ticket to Netgear support just tonight on this. Hope they will take a serious look at quickly fixing this bug. Apparently this DNS algorithm bug must be common to the V2 and V1 routers as I see WNDR3700-V2 owners are reporting similar issue of losing WAN connectivity.

Others, including myself, don't have disconnection issue using the latest firmware for the WNDR3700v1 router. So, it could be a quality control issue with the manufacturing, or perhaps how we have our networks configured. It's certainly not 100 percent guaranteed if you use the latest firmware you will experience disconnections.

Re: WNDR3700v2 constantly drops WAN connection

I am sure that is true. It is probably a combination of several factors but in my case the firmware was the deciding factor.

I only mess with two settings.
1. I Enable SSID Broadcast for 2.4GHz and set a WPA-PSK [TKIP] password.
2. I set a Admin password.

Everything else is left on the default settings.

I have the WNDR3700 v1 and cable modem with two wired laptops and two Kindles, two iPhones, and 1 TV on wireless.

When I upgrade to 7.98 I get consistent drops and after I downgrade to 4.68 I have gotten zero drops going on three weeks. Before I downgraded I reloaded 7.98 using the process in your thread and it did not solve the problem.

Thanks for that thread by the way!!!

Any updates on this? I'm still power cycling my router up to 10 times a day.
