WNR2000v4 Firmware will not update - "firmware file is incorrect"

I have a WNR2000v4 with firmware v1.0.0.30. I am attempting to update the firmware.

Before I did anything, I did a factory reset based on the user documentation.

Now, I have (a) downloaded and unzipped the wnr2000v4-V1.0.0.70.img file from the Netgear support pages and ran the firmware update from the routerlogin.net window, and (b) clicked on the "Check for new version from the internet" and both times I get the message "This firmware file is incorrect!"

help!!!!

You might try a smaller jump in version numbers, but I wouldn't
expect much.  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and
Software Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the
kit(s).  Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file
for instructions.

   Otherwise:

Thanks for the suggestions but none seem to work.

Tried versions .40, .60 and neither was accepted as a valid file (same message).

Tried TFTP but that did not seem to do anything.

Frustrated that the downloads are clearly for the WNR2000v4 router but the program rejects them.

The TFTP scheme includes many steps, and many choices, including how
your computer's network interface was configured, and which TFTP client
program you use, and how you use it.  "Tried TFTP" is not a useful
problem description.  It does not say what you did.  It does not say
what happened when you did it.  As usual, showing actual actions with
their actual results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more
helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

If the right speck of memory is corrupt, then the gizmo won't know
right from wrong.

More specific instructions on using tftp would be helpful.

I en abled tftp in Windows features and found the exe in its subdirectory. But issuing tftp commands yielded NOTHING. No errors, no feedback whatsoever.

I will be happy to try it again with more
explicit instructions and what I should expect from issuing those commands.

More specific than what's in all those Netgear KB articles cited in
the previously cited thread?

With my weak psychic powers, I can't see your "tftp commands", or
what you did to prepare for them.

This is as good as you will get from Netgear:

How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using Windows TFTP | Answer | NETGEAR Support

You can also find videos and stuff out in Googleland.

Thank you for that link.  I will try tftp with those directions and report back.

Let me add, at this point, the router works fine.  The only issue is the firmware is out of date;  and then, the firmware will not update.  Is there any possibility that this might brick the router?

I will have to set this aside for a bit, but I promise I will follow thru.

In those circumstances it should be possible to avoid the need for tftp. That is really for the "flashing power LED" symptom.

If you cannot update the firmware in the usual way,  then something else may be going on here.

Normally, no, but stuff happens. My concern is that because you cannot update with the standard method, something else is going on and that might inxcreawse the risk of a "bricked" device.

There is a more severe form of factory reset that should put the device into "recovery mode":

  • Press reset for 30 seconds
  • Keep pressing reset while removing power
  • Keep pressing reset for another 30 seconds while apply power

Then try the firmware you retrieved.

I woukld start with the first:

WNR2000v4 Firmware Version 1.0.0.40 | Answer | NETGEAR Support

I say that because participation in various beta tests tells me that  the first release can be rushed, and can need immediate fixes to handle stuff that crops up early on.

If you can get the first one to stick, then you might find that the latest will also work.
