Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

I am having the same issue with WNR3500. Connection drops, its worse becasue I use VoIP from Vonage, the calls get disconnected becasue of the internet connection drops. Its frustrating sometimes, if I have to return this router and get a better one with longer range, what are the alternatives?

I have the Netgear Wireless-N USB adapter and the desktop is only 50ft away from the router in a different room, I am not getting the good signal strength, it only connects at 11-27 Mbps. I tried to change the router location, keeping it to the floor or ceiling, it did not help.

I read that Netgear is the only router has a strond long range signal, but no success so far. Please help.

Do you know that wireless channels overlap in frequency the three higher and three lower channels? That’s why the most common channels used are 1, 6, and 11. Your router may well be seeing the signal from some or all of the networks on channel 6.

By using channel 7 where there are 5 networks on channel 6 you will be potentially causing the router to process the weakened signal from those 5 channels, and still have to negotiate with those networks. It is better to share a channel with a strong signal than share with a weak signal. Of course it is far better to use a clear channel that is outside the overlap from other channels.

Thank you that was very useful information. By picking channel 11 I have doubled the reach of the router.

Seems as though the problem is still not fixed:

Having trouble keeping our wireless devices online:

Router:

Account Name WNR3500

Firmware Version V1.0.29_8.0.29NA

Disconnects all wireless devices everey 3-4 minutes.

Sodtware version 4.1.00.15.8
Driver version. 4.1.100.15.5
Supplicant version 4.100.15.8

2) Same as above

3) Emachines: uses a WN311B-100NAS. Most recent driver & software versions. (Matches the router)

The wireless systems don't show-up regularly in the Attached devices, and they cannot see the wired systems attached to the router.

All devices are within 20 ft of the router. High signal, low noise.

All computers run XP SP3.

Since nothing happens between ‘Authenticating’ and ‘Authentication time-out’ it looks to me like devices never properly connect at all. Are you running a MAC access list, if not make sure the option is disabled (maybe enable it, apply, then disable, apply, just to be sure)

Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

Just bought this thing today to replace an older 100mb version;

1st problem was that I had was that it doesn't have a true DMZ Zone. I have a printer that I want outside the firewall on my public ip and it doesn't work because there's not a way to tell it the mac address for the nic card and static public ip so that when the device is active that it sends data from the internet to that ip. Which a DMZ setting also works well for RDC PC's which help with work at home users).

2nd Problem is when I have my older router hooked up I can see all the computers in my workgroup but when I hook up the new one; all I see is my computer. Weird, right? I even tried different things to fix it because I thought that I did something wrong (like changing workgroup name, rebooting all computers, etc). Then at the end of the day; after getting exhausted from trying to get the thing to recognize my network; plugged back on the 100mb version and all the workgroup pc's showed up in the list.
Basically it doesn't support MS File and Print Sharing which is old school; I know but it's how small businesses still function without a Domain Server.

So far, I've had to add back in another 100mb switch between the router and the world and I've been on 1st and 2nd Level Support for a total of about 2 hours trying to get this New Router to work as good as one of their older ones and I'm surprised how stripped down this version is. I would think that after 5+ years since we purchased the 100mb version that the R&D of the product would have improved on an already good thing.

Recommendations: If needs are for MS File/Print Sharing or using multiple dedicated ip's; Don't purchase the WNR3500; purchase the ProSafe Series or another Manufacturer because the ProSafe is pricey.

Turning off the router SPI, which can sometimes confuse VoIP traffic as an attack can help in some cases. Also for VoIP it may be necessary to reduce the MTU (try 1400 or 1350 initially but some people take the value much lower);

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100603.asp

http://www.voiptroubleshooter.com/problems/mtu.html

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/677413.html

Remember for an asymetrical link the uplink rate is often a fraction of the downlink rate.

A very low MTU value will start to impact on other downloads because a larger number of smaller packets are used, but this may not be as dramatic as it sounds.

Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

I have discovered an issue that is occurring on multiple PC's were by the DHCP seem like it looses its lease after exactly 12 hours.

The the local area connection will drop completely then go to limited connectivity and then restore connection. This happens in the space of about 30 secs, I have only witnessed it on vista machines so far. However I have no been watching an XP machine to see if this occurs.

It occurs literally to the second of 12 hours....

Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

i just bought the WRN3500 not to long ago, a friend of mine has had problems with it but has gotten them resolved. I didnt notice any problems with mine untill yesterday when I finally got to messing with it. For whatever reason it drops all connections. Wired and wireless computers/xbox360 and wont even let me login in the router like some of you have discribed. I upgraded the latest firmware, tried all the older ones. Then I was talking to my friend and on his version he said ont he basic page when you log in there should be an option for internet timeouts; and to set it to 0. Mine doesnt have that and we supposedly should have the same router, but he said that he used to get the same problem untill he moved that to 0. i cannot find the option anywhere on mine. I now read how people are so unhappy with this router, i think maybe i should just go buy a new one. When it works it works great for me. When it works.......... why doesnt it work? why isnt that option no longer there??/.....

Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

Corpis,

Some options depend on your Internet connection type. For example if you have a DSL connection and your ISP requires login then selecting this in the Netgear Basic Settings page will enable the timeout feature which applies to DSL. If however your ISP does not require login, e.g. for a cable ISP, then the timeout option is removed when you select ‘No’ since the timeout is inappropriate to a cable connection.

Sorry guys I actually got it wrong with the 12 hours.

It is actually 24 hours, according to the LAC

Lease Obtained: Thursday 27 November 2008 12:28.03 am
Lease Expires: Friday 28 November 2008 12:28.04 am

These IP's have been reserved in the router as well and a disconnection still occurs upon DHCP renew. Is there a way to make the lease time infinite? I never had this issue with my older router (WPNT834).

I had the same problem with my 3500. LAN works fine but WiFi does not work properly after a total shut down. After exchanging info with Netgear I returned to the shop (MyCom) and exchanged it for a new one. Now wait and see whether it will continue to work longer then 1 week. I have now firmware V1.0.30_8.0.30.

My VoIP calls disconnect after 3 minutes. I have turned off SPI firewall, made my VoIP adapter a static IP and set it up as the DMZ, I also set QoS to max via the VoIP's MAC address. Finally, I changed the default MTU from 1492 to 1400, 1350, 1300, then tried 800 (then it would not connect to my DSL provider).

I called this in as a ticket, they 1st suggested I return the 3500 and try a new one. I did that. After setting it back up, it worked for several test calls. Then I let it do the auto update and the problem started again. It upgraded to firmware .29 (?? 30 is the highest I see on the web.. I had to upgrade my 1st router to .30 manually, this time I left it at .29). A full reset back to default and I still have the problem. Loading .22 software and it still has the problem. I am sunk. I have spent at least 20hrs on this between myself, Netgear support and my VoIP support (AT&T).

I have a D-Link DVG-5102S plugged into LAN port, and a "Speedstream" DSL modem plugged into WAN port. If the DVG is in front of the Netgear router I have no problems.

I wanted it behind my Netgear router so I could use QoS. Right now I lose my phone if others are doing stuff on the internet.

Maybe your Speedstream DSL modem is a mode/router which needs to be put into Bridged Mode.

? Not sure I understand... My VoIP does PPoE. I turned that off, assigned it a specific address and put it behind my Netgear router. Now the Netgear logs me on (via PPoE). The VoIP adapter worked perfect in front of the router... minus the poor voice quality when others are hitting the internet pretty hard... hence me wanting to put it behind the Netgear so I can use QoS.

Re: WNR3500 v1.0.22 Issues - Report Here

From what you describe either your modem is a straightforward modem, or it’s a modem/router that is already in Bridged Mode. I made my suggestion above because that was a possible problem and your earlier post did not detail where the ISP logon was taking place.

There is a known issue with the later versions of firmware for this router in that it doesn't forward the SIP packets to the ATA (the original factory firmware DOES NOT has have this issue).

Other than reverting your firmware back to the earlier revisions, you can try forwarding ports 5060 and 5061 (the standard SIP ports) to your ATA.

I've let netgear know about the issue, i can only hope that the next firmware release resolves this issue, as it is pretty damn frustrating.

I have tried that as well, it did not work. I forwarded 5060-5061, 10000-11000, and 5620. All given to me by AT&T. Nothing made a difference.

So, I guess I need to load older than .22? Doesn't one of these old versions lose QoS? Ugh.
