phishing email or authentic? How to know

I received a NETGEAR notice of a firmware update, but th elinks went to "click.e.netgear.com" which did not seem right to me.  The email looked auithtic and I was able to obtain the current update via NETGEAR Genie (avoiding all links in the email.  Still, I'm wondering if this was an authentic email.  Scammers are getting crafty.  Thanks in advance for you help.

What should be wrong with that?

Netgear isn't really crafty - it's a lame message, reminding to many receivers as Scam.

Re: phishing email or authentic? How to know

The web address was not netgear.com nor community.netgear.com.  That's what flagged a potential problem.  By your questioning my concern, I'll assume netgear also uses e.netgear, although I don't understand it.  Thanks for your response.

click.e.netgear.com it is - every marketing organisation does somehow collect counters of clicks to check the effectiveness of a campaign. To create a little bit more confusion, this is just a cname for click.virt.exacttarget.com - and that domain and the service is owned by salesforce.com.
