   Is that accurate?

> I cannot retrieve my id or password. [...]

"cannot" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

   Which "the popup" is that?

> [...] i click cancel and get unauthorized message.

What are you canceling?  Is it asking for a user name and password?
And do you "click cancel" instead of providing them?  Or what?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read. Look for "Types of
Logins" and/or "Reset".  Further reading might be helpful, too.

Apparently, your router/firmware does not have "the password recovery
feature", or else you haven't failed enough to trigger it.

Perhaps you should try putting in the appropriate user name and
password.  As instructed in the User Manual cited above.

   RTFM?

Which "this site"?  "routerlogin.net" (and its friends) should point
to your own router's management web site, not some external web site.
