usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

For some reason my windows 7 machine won't let me connect to the 2 TB WD disk I have connected to my WNDR3700 router. I try to UNC to the \\readyshare but I get an N/A error message.

The disk appears normally when I login to the router under "USB storage". And I am able to connect to the disk from my Mac PowerBook...

I followed the advice that NatRay gave to AndersJ (concerns a similar problem with the same disk) and:
1. Disabled MediaServer on the router
2. Deleted the ReadyDLNA folder from the disk
3. Added the disk as an "Approved USB Devices"

But to no avail...

Any suggestions as to how I can access the disk via UNC?

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

Is the disk still natively formatted as purchased (NTFS)

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

Thnx NatRay, but I already had network discovery turned on.

I've also disabled the firewall but still no luck. Maybe something is disabled in my msconfig?

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

3rd party firewall issue, or a "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" disabled issue maybe? Assuming you have an available share on the mac, can you acces the Mac share from this particular Win7 box?

I haven't renamed anything.

I've only tried to access the harddisk through explorer. Like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/75002848@N00/5182826644/

I also enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP (changed from auto).

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

I may be wrong, but I believe the issue is with your ‘Advanced Sharing Settings’. I have included a link that will illustrate how various settings are configured on my network. Compare each screen capture with your own settings.

Note:

Hope this helps . . . Let me know how it goes . . .

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

My advanced sharing settings now look exactly like yours, NatRay. But I still get the same "unspecified error". Very annoying.

I have a suspicion that it be a windows service that is not running. Do you have any suggestions for what services I should make sure run?

I'm considering returning the disk...

Actually I can't access the share on the mac... I can VNC to it, but I can't locate it on the network or access it via VNC - other way around works fine though.

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

I have added six additional screen captures, showing all services on TopCat. Use the link in my previous post to access all captures.

I don't believe it's the drive, but a fundamental networking issue. Windows allows sharing via Domains and Workgroups. I doubt if your infrastucture is that of a Domain, but is a Workgroup. What is the name of the 'Workgroup' your computers are a member. Is it the same as the WNDR3700's?

Can you see the USB device under the "USB Approved devices"?
Did you already upgraded the firmware of the router?
Advanced > USB Settings > USB Drive Approved Devices >

Is it listed on the compatibility list?

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

The compatibility list is a joke . . . it is rarely updated

I have added three additional captures. They concern 'Folder Options' . . . these options determine what you can or cannot see in 'Windows Explorer' . . .

You've yet to reply whether or not you have a 3rd party firewall(Kaspersky IS, Norton 360, etc etc) installed on this machine.

A word of caution might be necessary here though. BV's site is not for the timid, inexperienced, or casual user. Don't kid yourself if you fit one of those categories 'cuz you can hose your Windows install faster than you can blink.

Be VERY CAREFUL and record ANY changes you make should it be necessary at a later time to reverse your changes.

BlackViper's site has a default Services page for all Win7 versions HERE. Fire up SERVICES.MSC and compare the current with what BV shows for a fresh install of the corresponding Win7 version you have.

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

I you try to call netgear, they just tell sorry because it is not listed on their compability list.

I believe that the Readyshare is not 100% because it happened to in one point.
I cannot get my 16 GB thumbdrive in it (it was working before)
so i power on and off, unplug and replug, and nothing...

so I've tried to connect another thumb drive but a little lower capacity like 500 mb after it worked. Ive unplug it and connected the 16 GB and it starts working again.

We'll probably wait for a new firmware...

And honey, Who's Andy?

Andy is the guy who started this thread, he is the guy asking for help . . . I have the same drive that Andy has, and have never had a problem with it and the WNDR3700.

Discliamer:
Not including the NTFS driver issue . . .

Re: usb storage WD 2 TB disk WNDR3700 not showing up in windows 7

Hi... i tried to search here, and even though I did not find what I looked for, there
must be a thread, where you explain hot to connect an external HDD or USB key to the 3700.
Can anyone link me to this.. I could not access my HDD or USB key, when I tried.
I use fw 75 🙂
Thanks

Both the router and my computer are part of "workgroup". I've left and reentered the workgroup, but no change.
