what is the terminology for....

What is the terminology for using a modem router as an ethernet router.

In other words I want to plug the ethernet cable from a modem (well an ethernet cable in a motel room actually) into one of the ports of my wireless modem router and get internet from that rather than from the phone line directly into the modem router. I will then attach a printer by wire and two x laptops wirelessly.

This must be called something??

Oh. I beg your pardon. I didn't realize that you had posted to the DGND3700 forum. It's the way Netgear has "organized" these forums - a bit confusing, especially for the uninitiated.

I have a NB6Plus4W. Which is an old NetComm - I thought it was Netgear as everything else I have is Netgear. Stupid me, I will go to NetComm site to see if their product can do what I am looking for. I pensioned it off a few months ago cause it is only wireless G and have just got it back out of the cupboard..

See if this will help:

I think you will need to use "Bridging" mode, and just set DHCP and DNS to auto. Wireless G should be OK. Good luck.

Re: what is the terminology for....

2 cents, in existing free internet from the MOTEL has it's own system , adding to existing your own devices will causes issues ....

well an ethernet cable in a motel room actually

bridge mode will work on ethernet output at room for existing network using AP to existing ethernet / network may work but that all depends on how motel are setup

some uses guest network system which requires to signup so using AP can causes issues or using own LAN subnet different from Motel network will /may results of failure to work properly.
