Has it a model number?  Do you think that Seagate made only one such
device?

Your router's USB port is only USB 2, but that should not be the
problem.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for "USB Drive
Requirements".  What's the file system on your "new seagate 4tb drive
with usb 3"?  You may need to re-initialize the drive with file system
which the router firmware supports.

Re: wndr3400v2 not recognizing usb 3 external drive

Thank you for the response.  The Seagate model is STEB4000100 purchased from Walmart.  The file system on it is NTFS which is an acceptable file system for the router.  When i plug in the external drive directly to a computer it works just fine and have actually saved files to it.  But the router says that there is no usb drive when plugged into the router.    I have also updated the router's firmware to the latest firmware available.  Still looking for suggestions.....  Thanks

In addition the external drive when plugged into the router and powered up will spin up and the indicator light comes on.  If either the power or usb cable are unplugged the light on the drive goes out and you hear the drive quit spinning.

You can get an idea of what USB devices you can use from this page:

Will my USB drive work with ReadySHARE | Answer | NETGEAR Support

For serious networking use Ethernet.

Re: wndr3400v2 not recognizing usb 3 external drive

Thanks for the info.  But that page was no help at all.  It lists the newer routers but did have a link to a page with older routers like mine.  Again that page was no help as well listing only13 external drives as tested.  As the external drive I just purchased is brand new and my router is 2012 vintage, I am assuming my router is just outdated and I will probably just have to buy a newer version, as is with most computer products out there.
