Can not upgrade firmware on Netgear N300 Wireless Gigabit Router WNR3500L

The instructions for firmware upgrade are totally invalid on my router. It says to login to the admin panel and go to Maintenance > Router Upgrade but that option quite simply does NOT exist on my router. I called support and they *really* screwed me. A first level tech told me to turn the power on and off and then to clear the settings to factory default. That of course did not work and didn't change anything. When I called back to try to finish the call and figure out how to get back online they refused to finish supporting me until I PAID them. What a scam. They tell me to clear my settings and then say I have to pay to get the rest of the support. Unbelievable.

Anyway is my router defective? Is there another way to upgrade the firmware? What do I do. I believe my router is a WNR3500Lv1

Thank you.

Here's a screen shot showing the missing update option.

I tried different computers and different browsers too...

if this ISP provided then it may have branded firmware which can not be used with netgear firmware

I don't see anything on the box or in the administrative control panel that would indicate to me that it is branded by the ISP in any way. It looks exactly like any other retail sold router.

Plus I thought this was an "open source" router that's supposed to let you use any firmware you want?

if you bought this from retailer than would not be ISP branded

try TFTP to upload the firmware

Re: Can not upgrade firmware on Netgear N300 Wireless Gigabit Router WNR3500L

I think you seem to be on the wrong page for upgrading your firmware. Try these instructions fron the usuer manual.

Upgrading Manually to New Router Software
To manually select, download, and install new software to your router:
1. Under Maintenance on the main menu, select Router Status. Note the version number of your
router firmware.
2. Go to the WNR3500 support page on the NETGEAR website at
http://www.netgear.com/support.
3. Check the most recent firmware version offered against the firmware version shown on your
Router Status screen.
4. If the version on the NETGEAR website is more recent, download the file to your computer.
5. Under Maintenance on the main menu, select Router Upgrade.

I'm not on the wrong page. There is no "Router Upgrade" under "Maintenance" . See the screen shot.

Re: Can not upgrade firmware on Netgear N300 Wireless Gigabit Router WNR3500L

I copied these instructions from the Netgear WNR3500Lv1 setup guide and if you go to the website you can download the whole guide as well.

A login window similar to the one shown in Figure 14 will display.
2. When prompted, enter admin for the router user name and password for the router password,
both in lowercase letters. (For security reasons, the router has its own user name and
password.)
The Firmware Upgrade Assistant screen will display.
3. Click Yes to check for new firmware (recommended). The router will automatically check the
NETGEAR database for a new firmware image file. If no new firmware version is available,
the message “No New firmware Version Available” will display. (If you select “No,” you can
check for new firmware later on the same page.; see the online User Manual.
4. If new firmware is available, click Yes, and the router will automatically upgrade itself with
the latest firmware.Figure 14The router user name and password are not the same as any user name or
password you might use to log in to your Internet connection.
Do not try to go online, turn off the router, shut down the computer, or do
anything else to the router until the router finishes restarting! When the Ready
light stops blinking, wait a few seconds more before using the router.
