Not able to join 2.4Ghz

Hi there,

I just bought this modem/router few years ago and it was working fine until last week. I constantly “lost” the 2.4Ghz network and I am not able to join the network.

The reason I want to join 2.4Ghz it’s due to my smart devices which only works on 2.4Ghz bandwidth.

I have updated the firmware and still not helping.

Can someone please help?

Thanks 🙂

If something has just started happening, it is a good idea to think about what might have changed to make it happen. Maybe the neighbours have added to the local wifi noise.

Where does this message appear?

What are you trying to do when you see this?

It  might help if you said what these devices are. Otherwise we are shooting in the dark.

If a device only works on 2.4 GHz it will not see, or try to join, a 5 GHz SSID. Some IoT devices come with badly written setup apps that cannot set up a device on 2.4 GHz if they are connected at 5 Hz. One way to deal with that is to temporarily turn off the 5 GHz SSID.

If you cannot force your mobile to connect to 2.4 GHz, one way around this is to

  • temporarily disable the router's 5 GHz.
  • Tell the mobile to forget the 5 GHz SSID.
  • Give it a minute or two to forget the 5 GHz wifi connection
  • Connect to 2.4 GHz.
  • Do your thing with the IoT device
  • Enable the 5 GHz wifi
  • Complain to the people who made the IoT gadget

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Read the bit in the manual Control the WiFi Radios.

Re: Not able to join 2.4Ghz

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply 🙂

I just realised that I said I bought it few years ago, which was a mistake. I actually just bought this new modem and moved in into a new apartment.

I tried to connect to my LIFX lightbulb, Dyson Fan and Samsung purifier.

I have to constantly reset my modem so that I can re-join 2.4Ghz. After a while, the 2.4Ghz will drop off and I am not able to join the network.

How about the other questions?

And what does that screen shot come from? An app of some sort?

It seems to show a 4G phone network.
