BR200 and Static Public IP

My public IP is static.  My provider said I should set the Netgear router's IP to static.  In WAN Setup, I selected Use Static IP Address.  Each of the IP addresses, including the public IP address is prefilled and each is correct.  When I click Apply, and allow time to pass, I lose Internet connectivity (I am able to ping the LAN).  I waited longer and still was not able to ping anything outside the LAN.  I changed the setting back to Get Dynamically from ISP and I was again able to ping the Internet.  The grayed-out IP addresses are the same as what they were when I set set it to Static.  I appreciate anyone who can help me understand this.
