Can the config backup from a FVS336Gv2 (3.1.1-08) be safely loaded into another FVS336Gv2 (4.3.3-6)

Hello

I have a  FVS336Gv2 (3.1.1-08) and for troubleshooting purposes I would like to replace it with another FVS336Gv2 with different firmware (4.3.3-6).  Can the config backup from a FVS336Gv2 (3.1.1-08) be safely loaded into a FVS336Gv2 (4.3.3-6)?  Or do I have to reconfigure the FVS336Gv2 (4.3.3-6) from scratch.

Thanks.

Hi ted7,

It is not possible to restore the config backup from the FVS336Gv2 that is on firmware v3.1.1-08 to another FVS336Gv2 with firmware v4.3.3-6.  You will need to configure the FVS336Gv2 with firmware v4.3.3-6 from scratch.

Here is my suggestion.  Update the firmware of the FVS336Gv2 from v3.1.1-08 to the latest v4.3.3-6 then backup its config file.  Then, restore the config file to the other FVS336Gv2 taht is already on firmware v4.3.3-6.

Thanks.  So settings will not be erased when upgrading firmware on FVS336Gv2 from v3.1.1-08 to the latest v4.3.3-6? (under normal conditions)

@ted7,

Yes, the settings will not be erased when you upgrade the firmware from v3.1.1-08 to the latest v4.3.3-6.  I suggest you to upgrade the firmware in a ladderized manner.  The procedure would be, first, upgrade the firmware from v3.1.1-08 to v4.3.1-18.  Then, upgrade the firmware from v4.3.1-18 to v4.3.2-7 and so on until you finally upgrade to the latest v4.3.3-6.  Be reminded that it would be best to perform a factory reset on the FVS336Gv2 after upgrading the firmware to the latest version then reconfigure it from scratch in order to start clean using the latest firmware.

@ted7,

I just want to follow-up on this.  Were you able to upgrade the firmware of your FVS336Gv2 from v3.1.1-08 to the latest v4.3.3-6 then perform a factory reset and reconfigure it from scratch?

I also replaced the same FVS318Gv2 with another one, imported the config file and did the ladderized firmware updates. But when I connect the firewall to my network, I can get out to google, etc... But I cannot get in through VPN, RDP, or sharepoint. I have opened the ports 1723, 443, 80. It was working before with the same firewall model and now I do not know what I have to do to get this to work properly. (I had to replace it since it crashed on the firmware version 4.3.3-6 when we had a power shutdown)

Just to follow up on my end, I decided to configure the v4.3.3-6 fvs336gv2 manually after factory reset.  I never attempted the upgrade process.

DaneA, thanks for the info on firmware upgrades, etc...

@kraftsman,

Since you have upgraded the firmware to the latest version, I suggest you to perform a factory reset then reconfigure it from scratch in order to start clean using the latest firmware version.  Then, observe if same problem occurs.

So what you are saying, is that I factory reset the firewall with the recent firmware already installed, and do NOT import the config file, but to manually add in each setting?

Sorry it took so long to reply, this firewall has been giving me a real headache with scheduling down time to test.

@kraftsman,

Yes, its because it might be possible that the existing config file contains errors that causes the problem that is why it is much better to reconfigure everything from scratch in order to start clean using the latest firmware version.

I spent yesterday adding every piece of information manually back into the firewall after the factory reset but it did not work again. I just tried it this morning. I can get outside to google, but my users cannot get in. I am so frustrated at this point. I am sure it is just a check box somewhere that I am missing.

@kraftsman,

How is everything connected?  It would be best if you could post an image of your detailed network setup.

Are your users connected remotely to the FVS336Gv2 via VPN using a VPN client software?

I have found our that the ISP has there own router after their Ciena 3960 at my location. When I called and asked them about RIPv1 on my firewall being enabled on my cisco Linksys(temp one right now)  and not the Netgear they said it should not make a difference since the routers are bridged, but at this point I am going to try that this weekend, to see if it points the firewall to all the NAT settings.
