FVS318N WAN to LAN throughput and performance

Hi,

Recently upgraded my DSL connection 8M/1M to Cable 130M/30M. I changed from using PPoE to direct connection and modified the MTU size back to the default 1500 as per the provider recommendation. I have some 30 outbound rules and one site to site VPN to a FWG114Pv2.

When I connect iover wired gigabit ethernet to the LAN port. I get speed tests results limited to 30M down and 30 M up. When I disconnect the WAN cable of the FVS318N and directly connect the Cable modem I get the promised 130Meg down and 30 Meg up. I backed up the FVS318N config and ran a factory default. Speed tests using the FVS318N result in 130Meg down and 30 meg up. This puts the

trouble shooting effort into the config differences. Im running the following version of the software. During speedtests and downloads, the Webgui is unresponsive.

System Name:FVS318N
Firmware Version:4.3.3-6

As the FVS318N is rated to be 250Mbps LAN-WAN performance, I'm wondering what may be affecting the throughput so much.

Hope that you can help!

I have 31 rules outbound, all have logging enabled, but disabling logging doesnt seem to affect performance

I have 10 inbound rules. all logging enabled

VLANs: 3 defined, including default

SSIDs: 3

I diffed the config backup files between the default and my config:

Despite the web gui reporting Autosense on the WAN port, this is in my config:

PortMgmt[9]["DuplexMode"] = "0"
PortMgmt[9]["AutoNegEnable"] = "1"
PortMgmt[9]["PortSpeed"] = "10"

the default config shows:

PortMgmt[9]["DuplexMode"] = "1"
PortMgmt[9]["AutoNegEnable"] = "1"
PortMgmt[9]["PortSpeed"] = "1000"

the 10 Mbit port speed doesn't make sense and would actualy limit the trouhhput to 10 Mit, but I'm getting 30 Mbit..so this should not affect it.

I have syslog enabled:

sysLogInfo[1]["Enable"] = "1"
sysLogInfo[1]["_ROWID_"] = "1"
sysLogInfo[1]["severity"] = "8"
sysLogInfo[1]["serverName"] = <removed>

What's more: Attack checks. The default configuration shows that the webgui and manual report TCP and UDP flood protection are enabled, bnut the config fiel shows otherwise:

AttackChecks[1]["TcpFlood"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["ExternalPingAddress"] = "0.0.0.0"
AttackChecks[1]["StealthMode"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["UdpFlood"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["DropInvalidResetPacket"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["PingReplyOnLan"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["DnsProxy"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["IpsecPassthrough"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["_ROWID_"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["udpConnLimit"] = "25"

In my custom config:

AttackChecks[1]["TcpFlood"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["ExternalPingAddress"] = ""
AttackChecks[1]["StealthMode"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["UdpFlood"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["DropInvalidResetPacket"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["PingReplyOnLan"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["DnsProxy"] = "0"
AttackChecks[1]["IpsecPassthrough"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["_ROWID_"] = "1"
AttackChecks[1]["udpConnLimit"] = "100"

diabling attack checks does not change the throughput however. has been tested.

Logging, nothing fancy

FirewallLogs[1]["LANToDMZAccept"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["BandwidthLimitLogs"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["LANToDMZDROP"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["LANToWANAccept"] = "1"
FirewallLogs[1]["SessionLimitLogs"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["DMZToLANAccept"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["DMZToWANDrop"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["SourceMACFilter"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["LANToWANDrop"] = "1"
FirewallLogs[1]["WANToDMZAccept"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["WANToLANDrop"] = "1"
FirewallLogs[1]["WANToDMZDrop"] = "0"
FirewallLogs[1]["WANToLANAccept"] = "1"

Hope that anyone knows the answers to this riddle.

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hi noibla,

Welcome to the community! 🙂

When you did a factory reset on the FVS318N, did you try reconfigure it from scratch and check if same problem occurs?  If not, kindly try to backup the setting then perform a factory reset then configure the internet connection from scratch (no firewall rules yet just set it up for internet access).  Then, check if you will be getting 130Mbps download and 30Mbps upload speeds.

I look forward to your response.

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hi DaneA,

As indicated I did a factory reset and configured minimal settings to bring the Internet connection online. With these settings I was getting the 130M and 30 M speeds. I can send the default (minimal config) and the original config (password sanitized for review).

Would it halp to conenct the serial console to do command line debugging?

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hi noibla,

With the minimal config, kindly set up a box-to-box VPN to the FWG114Pv2 then check if you would still get 130Mbps download and 30Mbps upload speeds.  No firewall rules yet.

About sending the minimal config file and the original config file, I encourage you to open an online case with NETGEAR Support.  You can attach the config files on the online case for it to be analyze.

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hi DaneA,

With a minimal config with VPN I'm getting 130 MB throughput regardless of the VPN being active or not.

I alsonoted that the password I have assigned to the admin is no longer allowed in the WebGui. have these restrictions changed overtime? A special character is no longer allowed ")"

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Enabling logging without any rules drops the performance to 90 MB down. could be affected by the Resolved DNS names log setting.setting DNS resolved names ot 0 gets the 130 MB back

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hey DaneA,

a. How is everything connected? WAN interface from our ISP, LAN to 2 gigabit switches.  have aproximately 25 devices connected.

b. Did you also change your internet connection from DSL to cable?  negative, never was DSL, is static business class from ISP cable company  100/75 is what we are paying for.

c. What is the current firmware version of your FVS318N?  4.3.3-6, i know there is a later version, i will be loading it up tonight after work hours.

d. What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?  when i plug a pc directly into the cable modem/router, i get the speeds purchsed so not an ISP issue.  when I test going through the Netgear, only getting around 50/32.  i've tried being plugged into the switch and also directly into the Netgear, with same 50/32 results.

any ideas is appreciated.

Regards,

Phil

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

@2M,

Since you plan to update the firmware of your FVS318N to v4.3.3-8, be sure to perform a factory reset on the FVS318N after successfully upgrading the firmware then reconfigure it from scratch.  Afterwards, observe if same problem occurs.

@Retired_Member,

Were you able to open an online case with NETGEAR Support and report about your concern for further assistance?

No I was unable to do this because I cannot transfer the 2nd hand FVS318N serial number to my account 😞

Why do we need to reconfigure the entire unuit from scratch? Isn't the purpose of the firmware upgrade to deal with the current configu or at least accept the configuration backup file?

It's like every time a patch is release I have reconfigure my preferences in Windows....

After reboot prior to upgrade I'm back at 191/32 but this decreased overtime. Will upgrade the firmware now and see how long this speed will remain. No mention of a fix related to the memory leak in the release notes.

@Retired_Member,

A factory reset is recommended in order to have a clean setup on the VPN firewall using the latest version of the firmware.

@2MTech,

If ever the same problem occurs after you have upgraded the firmware to the latest version, I suggest you to open an online case with NETGEAR Support at anytime and report about your concern for further assistance.

After upgrade the unit held 1 day of 191/30 performance, but has now dropped to 56/30

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

@Retired_Member,

I'm afraid that we could not yet conclude if its really a memory leak unless the logs has been analyzed by the engineering team.  Thus, opening an online case with NETGEAR Support is advisable.

Hi Danea, I seem to be unable to register a case with Online support for this, please advise on how to proceed.

Regards!

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

I'm very disappointed in the support from Netgear. I have strripped down the router configuration so that minimal logging is enabled and still the loggin seems to be garbled and overrunning. With the Latest software release form august 2016 nothing has changed.

I reboot the router once in a whil and then I'm able to get the speed that I have with my ISP (190 Mbps down and 30 Mbps up). but after a while this drops back to 30/30.

Very disappointed with a product that has a datasheet that claims 250 Mbps throughput.

Hi noibla,

I believe that the NETGEAR Support expert assigned on your case # 27489789 has already responded to you and is asking for the serial number of your FVS318N as well for it to be registered.  Kindly reply into it and keep us posted about the progress of your online case.

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

This is quite interesting.  I've never been able to get any of my fvs318n's above 60 something download on the wan.  I'll be curious to see the solution to this riddle.

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Hi All,

The support case had led to the unit being replaced but something else happened too. 2 new firmware releases took place. 4.3.4.1 and 4.3.4.2. The 4.3.4.1 release note have the following comments:

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed the issue where the logs are not displayed properly in the GUI and on Syslog server.
  • Fixed the issue where the firewall logs contain incomplete logs messages.

The unit was replaced under RMA afer good response from the Netgear team. I returned my old unit and the new unit came in a box where the specs still referred to the old datasheet (95 Mbps WAN-LAN).

Both units (witn 4.3.4.1 software ran fine with the 190 Mbps consistent download. I also further looked into differences in the hardware platform used (Cavium CNS3411 Network processor). Both units were the same.

To summarise: it was likely a memory leak issue in the prior firmware in relation to the log messages prior to firmware 4.3.4.1

Re: FVS318N LAN to WAN throughput and performance

Thank you for posting a followup to the issue!

I will definitely have to try the 4.3.4.1 and 4.3.4.2 releases and see if my WAN speeds break the 60Mbps barrier.  I actually have a much faster connection (150/25) at one of my endpoints that's being limited to 60Mbps, so it will be a worthwhile upgrade if it works for me as well.
