FVX538v2 DHCP provides DNS from both WAN ports

Goal: Setup the FVX538V2 with 2 to provide separate ISP connections with distinct DNS to different LAN Group devices.

Issue:

- Currently I have a different ISP connection to each of the WAN connections.

- Each of these ISP connections are configured with different DNS.

- WANs are in Load Balancing Mode.

- 2 LAN groups have been created. Devices in Group 1 are meant to communicate through WAN 1. Devices in Group 2 are meant to communicate through WAN 2.

- DNS proxy feature has been turned off

- The DHCP server in the FVX538 is passing the correct gateway information to the appropriate groups (ie: gateway from WAN 1 is configured for Group 1 LAN devices)

The problem is that the DHCP server in the FVX538 is passing all the DNS information to all devices instead of passing only WAN1 DNS info to Group1 and WAN 2 DNS info to group 2.

When I do an IP config /all in any of the LAN devices (whether they are in Group 1 or Group 2) they list the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS from WAN 1, and then 2 additional DNS entries from WAN 2.

Is there a way to make the FVX538 keep the DNS separate so DNS from WAN 1 is only configured for Group 1 LAN devices? and DNS from WAN 2 is only configured for Group 2 Devices?

Thanks!

Re: FVX538v2 DHCP provides DNS from both WAN ports

Hi Pandarus,

Welcome to the community!

Here are my questions below:

a. Does it affect the performance of internet connection of the devices on either Group 1 or Group 2 if it shows the primary and secondary DNS from both WAN 1 and WAN 2 on any PC?

b. What is the current firmware version of the FVX538v2?

I look forward to your response.

Re: FVX538v2 DHCP provides DNS from both WAN ports

Hi DaneA

a: Devices in Group 1 assigned to WAN1 appear to work fine because the Primary/Secondary DNS assigned by the FVX538v2 DHCP are native to that connection. The internet connection for devices in Group 2 assigned to WAN2 does not work properly because the Primary /Secondary DNS assigned to that group are from WAN1, and then the DNS for WAN 2 are assigned..

As an example:

WAN 1:

Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1

Secondary DNS: 2.2.2.2

WAN 2:

Primary DNS: 3.3.3.3

Secondary DNS: 4.4.4.4

the FVX538v2 DHCP assigns the DNS to all LAN devices regardless of the group:

Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1

Secondary DNS: 2.2.2.2

3rd DNS: 3.3.3.3

4th DNS: 4.4.4.4

This works ok for any devices in Group1, but not Group 2 which needs Primary DNS: 3.3.3.3, Secondary DNS: 4.4.4.4

Hope that helps.

b: Firmware version: Version 3.1.1-08

Thanks,

John

Re: FVX538v2 DHCP provides DNS from both WAN ports

Hi Pandarus,

There is no option to set a static DNS for each group set on the FVX538v2.  However, just to isolate the problem have you at least tried to set a static DNS on the devices in Group 2?
