The Future of Connected Devices - National Cybersecurity Awareness Month #BeCyberSmart
The growing trend of connected devices is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, it is estimated that 63 million American homes will qualify as “smart” by 2021, with many IoT devices like lighting, thermostats, appliances, home security and more expected to enter our homes. Even more, the growth of connected devices also applies to wearables, which include devices like smartwatches, fitness trackers, hearbales, and health devices. According to Statista, by 2022, it’s expected that 25% of the adult population in the US will be using a wearable device. With the ability to set up home automation or having quick access to data and information, it’s easy to see the appeal of connected devices.
With technological innovation, we can expect to be even more connected than before. In Erricson’s Mobility Report from June 2019, it was estimated that 45% of the world’s population would have 5G coverage by 2024. With faster speeds, lower latency, and higher capacity, 5G connectivity means devices will be able to communicate with each other more efficiently. Not only will we see its impact on IoT when keeping individuals and homes connected, but we’ll soon begin to see its impact on business, education, cities and more.
While the evolution of technology and the future of connectivity is exciting, one thing we must be aware of is that the tactics of cyber criminals will evolve as well. Practicing safe habits while staying connected and realizing the influx of connectivity that may increase in our daily lives can help us prepare for what the future may hold. By creating a security culture today, it can help us combat the threats of tomorrow.
