FSM726 Password/Login Problem PROS PLEASE HELP??
thank you for your time...
I bought a Netgear FSM726 V1 Managed Switch from a company going out of business. I do not have any information about its configuration including console and web configuration username/passwords.
I would like to simply reset the switch to factory config[that way if the company had any werid setting buried deep in the config it wouldnt cause me issues].
I looked in the support page for this switch on netgear, these discussion forums, and on the web. There is limited information on this subject it seems.
Looks like what I want to do is technically called "Emergency Password Recovery".
After my research it seems there are 2 ways to do this:
METHOD #2
1. connect to console of switch, fire up hyperterminal
2. reboot switch and hit "ESCAPE" and I should get a ">"[carrot] prompt on the hyperterminal screen where I can enter "EmergencyPasswordReset" and follow the steps here:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?ui_mode=answer&prior_transaction_id=62 24461&action_code=5&highlight_info=16778146,8,15&t url=http%3A%2F%2Fkbserver.netgear.com%2Fkb_web_fil es%2Fn101254.asp&answer_id=31227354#__highlight

or
============
METHOD #2
1. connect to console of switch, fire up hyperterminal
2. While booting up, press to enter boot code menu.
3. Press in boot code main menu to enter debug menu.
.....and there are some more steps for those who are familiar with this process....
===========================
PROBLEMS
I cannot get EITHER of these methods to work.
METHOD #1.... if i press "ESCAPE" while booting the switch I get this:
Boot from lash or etwork
If I boot from FLASH the switch boots normally and I get to the "login:" prompt...and like I said before I dont know it. I have tried these combos several different ways just to check:
username: admin,netgear,administrator,manager,monitor,[blank]
passwords:admin,netgear,administrator,manager,moni tor,[blank]
Anyway.. if I choose "Network"...it asks me for TFTP server information and such. Well I downloaded the NEWEST BIN file from netgear and TFTP'ed it with this method.I figured...hey... if I give the switch a new OS then maybe that will clear the password/s. NO. The upgrade was successful but the passwords stayed.
METHOD #2
==============================
1. connect to console of switch, fire up hyperterminal
2. While booting up, press to enter boot code menu.
[this would be "debugging" mode"?]
.............I have tried control+c, control+d... you name it... it doesnt make any difference to the switch. While rebooting and holding these buttons the switch still boots normally and no prompts, menus, or buttons "show up"...
At 1st I thought... well this is stupid.. maybe the switch is not "seeing" the "control" key I am pressing...... So to "check" and make sure the switch "sees" when I am pressing "control" when I am at the "login" menu after the switch boots... I can type "c" on the keyboard and "c" shows up.... but when I press "control" and "c" TOGETHER..I get a "heart" or other werid character on the screen... so to me this "shows" the switch is "seeing" the keys im sending it...
I think because my switch is V1 that it may have a different key combo to get to a ">" or "boot code menu".
hopefully someone's mind will ring a bell and you can help me get over this speed bump.... thank you for your time....

Re: FSM726 Password/Login Problem PROS PLEASE HELP??
by the Restore command."
I Google that and found on KOREAN Netgear website:
http://www.netgear.co.kr/Support/QueryView.asp?IDXNo=43
There are two ways to recover password for NETGEAR Manageable switches, one is to use recovery tool, and the other is to use hidden command.
FSM726 uses only hidden command "EmergencyPasswordReset" to disable password.
Please follow the below given procedure to reset the password for FSM726:
1) Power on switch, click "ESC" key very quickly to go to Mini Boot Monitor mode.
2) Click "Enter" key.
3) Enter "EmergencyPasswordReset"
4) There is a question "Are you sure? (y/n)". The answer is "X". It will disable password.
5) Enter "g" to boot up.
This will reset the password for FSM726.
Unfortunately it doesn't work... I can't get into this Mini Boot Monitor. So far I only accomplished getting into the mode which allow me to change device IP or upload new firmware... (using your method with Ctr+C).
I keep trying...

Re: FSM726 Password/Login Problem PROS PLEASE HELP??
Has anyone been able to get the password recovery to work on the FSM726 v1 (mine's got the original firmware).
TFTP boot w/ newer firmware doesn't reset the password either.

2. Press in boot code main menu to enter debug menu.
3. Press "5" to choose "Flash Access".

7. Confirm this command.
FSM726v1
You need to interrupt the boot sequence and use a hideen system command:
1) Power on switch, press"ESC" key very quickly to go to Mini Boot Monitor mode. (If you press too late you will go into the option to boot from Flash or Net via TFTP.)
2) Press "Enter" key.
3) At the commend prompt Type: . EmergencyPasswordReset (Exactly as written it is case sensitive and doesn''t like spaces. This is a hideen command.)
4) There is then a question . "Are you sure? (y/n)". The answer is "X". This a capital X - It will disable password.
5) You will get a response that the system password has been disabled - if you don''t get this confirmation it hasn''t worked because you have mistyped something but it won''t tell you that.)
5) Enter "g" to re boot. .g
This will disable the password for switch on reboot.
