Fiber cable options for a 10Gb link between a M5300-28G3 and an XS708T

Hello,

 

I have 2 switches to connect with a 10Gb link:

- XS708T (8 ports 10Gb Ethernet with 1 combo SFP+ port and without extension slots at the back)

- M5300-28G3 (24 Gigabit ports + 2 SFP+ ports and some extension slots at the back)

 

I understand I can use 2 of these SFP+ AXM763 adapters but when it comes to cable, I am not quite sure.
BTW, are there any other adapters that would work like the Cisco ones?

There is a 20 meters distance between the 2 switches.

 

Can anyone recommend what kind of cable I can order for that purpose?

Is that LC/UPC Multimode?

Hi @phuketmymac ,

 

If the switches are distant from 20 meters, you could user the NETGEAR 20-meter DAC (AOC) cable called:

AXC7620-10000S

 

This way it would be all in one, with SFP+ connector on both sides.

 

The AXM763-10000S LRM module is for OM1/OM2 old style 62.5 multimode fiber, it really depends on your fiber, and if you need or not mode conditioning patch cords. Maybe the long DAC cable would be better for you?

The official Netgear designation is:

 

SFP+ Transceiver 10GBASE-LRM (AXM763)
SFP+ Transceiver, 10GBase-LRM for multimode 62.5/125µm OM1 or OM2 fiber

 

On SFP and SFP+ modules, LC (Lucent Connectors), PC describes the ferule connection point. UPC is mechanically identical, providing much less loss, typically dark blue

 

OM1 (legacy 62.5/125µm, 100 Mb/s @ 100m or 1 Gb/s @ 33m, orange ) or OM2 (legacy 50/125µm, 1Gb/s @ 100m or 10 Gb/s @ 82 m, orange)  are the minimum fiber requirements for these multimode fiber link connections.

 

All OM3 (10Gb/s @ 300m, LOMMF, aqua), OM4 (10 Gb/s @ 550m, VSCEL laser), and OM5 (min.28Gbps per channel in the 850-953 nm color window,  WBMMF (wideband multimode fiber), lime green) fibers are with 50/125µm on the same core size, and are backward compatible.

 

Avoid the LC APC (typically green), optically slightly better, except where required, works on APC to APC connections only.

 

If buying from the grab table, avoid Single Mode Fiber (SMF), typically 9/125um (exists with 8.3...10 micron core diameter also on 125um), often typed as OS1 and OS2 to be combined with Multi Mode Fiber (MMF). SMF deploy different optics, different senders and receivers - but also on LC PC and and LC UPC, in the field more with LC APC and more exotic connectors. With the appropriate modules, these can operate short reach connections but up to 200 kilometers.

 

Unless you know exactly what you buy, and what you get, be careful - some switches are more critical. Broadcom equipped modules are typically less cumbersome than others. The older M5300 don't "take everything".

I was not aware they had a 20m cable all in one. Thanks I'll check that out.
