1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

Hello,

I searched extensively for a compatible DIMM for my ReadyNAS NV to upgrade it to 1GB. I already ordered a wrong module by guessing what type I needed so I would like to have a type-nr from somebody that successfully upgraded his memory before.

The original memory DIMM is: AENEON PC3200S-3033-1, 256MB, DDR, 400, CL3 and I would like to upgrade it to 1GB

Many thanks!

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

NV and NV+ are practically the same as each other (differences explained in FAQ) and use the same memory as each other.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

NV/NV+ be spec uses PC2700. This module will work. http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs. ... T12864X335

If your unit came with PC3200 CL3 then this one should work as well. Not sure it will provide any advantage as I think the NV/NV+ motherboard will still be limited to PC2700 speed.

This is the stick I left in my defective NV+ that was RMA'd, trying to see if I can recover it.
NewEgg quit selling this stick, so I guess I can buy it from here, and it should work as it did in my last one.
I hope so, not happy about paying another $50!! But I want a stick that will work.

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

For my ReadyNAS NV+I purchased the following from offtek:

Manufacturer: NETGEAR Memory Size: 1GB Module
Product: ReadyNAS NV+ RND4450 Quantity: 1 Unit Price: £23.25

It passed the memory check, and booted and has been running happily for over a week. Which is great as when I found the memory it seemed to good to be true. I opted for the 95p first class delivery and it arrived the next day (Saturday), but I believe they also offer a free delivery service, and no I do not work for them.

Here is the URL http://www.offtek.co.uk/ram-memory/netgear/netgear-workstation-server-memory/memstid6

Now all I need to do is source some 6-32 UNC 4mm countersunk screws...

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

If you're in Canada (or the US) this stuff seems to be compatible:

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=31402&promoid=1292
http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/17798 ... S/Patriot/

Passed three rounds of the memory test. Full 1GB shows up in the web interface.

Sped up my NV+ a fair bit. 32-35MB/sec during large file copies. Smiley Happy

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

I have sucessfully upgraded the memory in 2 units. one is a NV+ and the other is a Dou.

I got the SODIMM at Fry's in Houston.

Corsair VS1GDS333 they sell them for 37.99 although the will pricematch Amazon for $31.99.

Since i have seen that some people are saying the "new" corsairs, just like "new" Kingston...cruitial ... Partriat.. ect may not work, I think I have figured out what to look for in roder to make sure you get one that does....

In another thread somwhere I read that it will not support 1G-bits DDR chips. You need to make sure you get a 1GByte module made up of 512M Bit chips. The easiest way to determine this is simply to count the big chips on the board. If there is 8 that are 1M bit chips, if there are 16 they are 512m bit chips. You will likely find 8 chips on each side (front and back) for a total of 16 on the ones that are compatable.
If there are only 8 chips, it will likly NOT work. I cant confirm what wont work, but I can confirm that both the 16 Chip Corsairs I bought work.
Whats good about getting them at a B&M store is you can count the chips, and if it isnt 16....ask for a different one before you checkout.

It will run at DDR-333 speeds. There's no advantage to buying DDR-400. (Unless it's cheaper. Then there is an advantage.)

It's the chip count that matters. Don't forget to run the memory test 2+ times to make sure it's stable.

Bought the Patriot PSD1G33316S you linked to at NCIX, installed it in a ReadyNAS NV+ that was failing to take some rsync backups. Problem fixed, rsync is now doing fine.

For the next person googling, I leave this breadcrumb from my cronjob:

my Linux server talking to a ReadyNAS NV+ wrote:

rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes: phase "unknown": Connection reset by peer
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(836)

Fix that ^ with more RAM.

Consistent with randynas' note about DDR chip size, my RAM module had 16 chips on it (8 on each side).

Also I should note that if you plan to do this upgrade and perform the recommended 2 cycles of memory testing, you should budget at least 4 hours downtime for the tests to complete.

Thanks for the help, BikeHelmet, randynas et al.

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

I wanted to upgrade my NV+ and had a LOT of trouble finding definitive information on what to buy. So I first took-apart my unit and found this:

Unigen UG032D6686LM-GJFHYN
256MB DDR400 SO-DIMM 200PIN

Then I searched (and searched, and searched some more) on 1GB SO-DIMMs with a CL of 2.5 and came-up with a grand total of one, which I found at Newegg.com:

AllComponents ACSO400X64/1024
1GB SC DDR-400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820159414

Seeing a positive NV+ review there, and that it was only $29 bucks, made this a must-buy for me. Almost done with the 2nd test, after one successful one already--seems like a winner.

Apparently some here have been successful with other speeds (and 3.0 CAS Latency) but I am happy to find a 1GB chip that matches my old SODIMM.

http://www.micron.com/~/media/Documents/Products/Part%20Numbering%20Guide/215numsdrammod.ashx\

According to the Micron Technology data sheet, it is a 16 chip, 2.5V DDR SDRAM, DDR FBGA, 128 x 64, 200-pin SODIM, DDR333 FBGA, 167Mhz clock, 333MT/s Data band rate, PC2700, 2.5-3-3

The nice part, it the part number says it has 16 memory components...I am trying to find another one.

1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV+

I leave this note as future reference and potential memory upgraders:

I have two NV+ running with Radiator 4.1.8.

The first one, I was able to sucessfully update to 1GB RAM (Kingston KVR333X64SC25/1G, a type which was recommended in another post). Memory test was passed successfully more than 4 times. The unit is runing smoothly.

The other one will pass the memory test (so far 5 or 6 times). But now the unit hangs while booting. First the blue power-LED will start to flash more slowly, then more irregularly, then it will freeze - either off or on. The display shows "Booting" for hours. The unit still works fine with the 256MB RAM.

I guess it only shows what a gamble the memory upgrade is ...

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

Was it the same module?

How much newer is the second NV+?

You are right about memory upgrades being a gamble. I tried the 1GB module out of a 2004 HP laptop as it matched the specs. It worked great, but since I only used it as a file server without any add-ons, I noted no significant performance increase, and when I needed the laptop back, I returned the original memory module back to the NV+ and the 1GB back to the laptop. That was over a year ago now.
Remember - the NAS is not a backup plan.

Backup = Good, No Backup = Bad

Re: 1GB Memory for ReadyNAS NV

I found a small increase in Read/Write speed with PC-router-ReadyNAS NV+ by upgrading to Crucial 1Gb memory, as documented on a little wiki that I wrote: <http://readynas.pbworks.com/>
I do disaster prevention, not disaster participation.
