Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

Hi

Having some strange things happening here. I reinstalled my OS on my ReadyNAS 102 yesterday and today when i was trying to go to settings i couldn't use my default password. Installed AVAST to yesterday and today it warned me about my router and NAS security settings so i was about to change the password but i did not even managed to login.

Now i have reinstalled the OS once more and after the seccond try it locked my account and told me to try again after 5 mins.

Why is that?

Just now i managed to login for a couple of secconds then i bar showed up and it says something about Connecting to the ReadyNAS admin page...... and then nothing happens... it just loads and loads ....

After i have loged in a couple of seccond conecting to page is automatically there without me doing anything. And after a while i get the name and passord dialog poping up. It keeps doing this over and over again...

This is the OS partition ("system volume root").  It's not about how much data you have stored on the NAS.  The full OS partition might be linked to the difficulty in getting the hotfix installed.

There are three ways to fix this:

  1. Engage paid Netgear support to do it for you remotely.  This will require purchase of a support contract.
  2. Backup all your data, do a factory default, and set the NAS up again.
  3. Fix it yourself with ssh.

Since you really don't have much data on the NAS, option 2 is what I'd suggest. If you have no experience with the linux command line, I don't recommend option 3.

The default password for the admin account is password.  Is that what you were using?

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

Yes at first but today I have changed the password because avast complained about the security of my system. I’ve also cleared the browser cache.
Now when I came in to the computer the admin settings page was loaded and steady.
Restarting the computer and see if it works.
Nope it keeps loading over and over again.

Does it work properly if you disable AVAST?

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

What firmware are you running on the NAS?  There was a login loop in 6.10.5 that was recently addressed in a hotfix pushed by Netgear.

If you aren't sure what you are running, RAIDar should be able to tell you.  https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

Yes it’s that version.
Unfortunately I can’t check for updates because the page is reloaded before that updatecheck is made.

The key question is whether you are running 6.10.5 hotfix 1 or just 6.10.5.

One thing to try is to reboot the NAS using the front panel "preferred shutdown" describe on page 20 here: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS-100/ReadyNAS_%20OS6_Desktop_HM_EN.pdf That might install the hotfix.

You could alternatively do another OS reinstall (keeping AVAST disabled for now).  Then make sure you are running hotfix 1 before you change the admin password again.

I updated my firmware yesterday.
Is that the hotfix version then?
I’ve reinstalled the os once today.

No.  Netgear doesn't roll up the hotfix until their next release.  So the hotfix is downloaded over the internet and installed by the firmware.

The firmware will periodically look for hotfixes (and I think will normally also do that on boot-up).  That process only works if the NAS is allowed to reach the internet (and some folks have their NAS set up to prevent that).

Did you change the password afterwards?  If you did, then try it again.  But don't change the password for now, and keep AVAST disabled to it doesn't get in the way of troubleshooting.  Then see if hotfix 1 shows on on the home scren.

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

So if i understand you correctly my NAS can't download the hotfix because of i have changed the default password?

Or is it something else that should be configured to make it download this hotfix by it self?

Shall i reinstal the OS once more and let it be so untill i can see that the hotfix is installed? And where can i see that it is?

There should be a record saying

System: A hotfix was applied to your system (6.10.5 Hotfix 1)

That isn't there in your log fragment.

Note when I said it would say hotfix 1 on the home screen, I meant the system overview screen

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

So how can i be sure that my NAS will download this hotfix then?

Must i reinstall the OS to get the default password again to be able to get this hotfix?

Would'nt the system say there's a new update when i press the check for updates...?

At the moment you need to regain access.  Then you can do more troubleshooting.

I am recommending the OS reinstall (with no change to the password) so you can regain access.  That worked for at least most people who have had these symptoms before you.

Then you can simply look at the system->overview screen to see if you have the hotfix installed or not.

There is also a setting on system->settings->update to enable automatic hotfix updates.  It is possible that it is not checked on your system.

I'm not sure about that, but I think the answer is no (that the check doesn't include hotfixes).

Re: Admin settings keeps loading over and over again with the latest firmware.

As for now i'm inside the settings and the admin page is not reloading all the time. I can see that i don't have the hotfix installed just 6.5.10 it says. Is there more i can can check or do besides turn on automatic updates now when the page is stable and working?

Make sure that automatic hotfix updates are enabled. Also make sure that your NAS can reach the internet.  You can download the full log zip file from the logs page, and look in connman.log  If you see NTP time adjustments, then your NAS can reach the internet.

Aug 31 23:41:18 NAS connmand[5639]: ntp: adjust (slew): +0.001618 sec
Aug 31 23:58:22 NAS connmand[5639]: ntp: adjust (slew): +0.000771 sec
Aug 31 23:58:54 NAS connmand[5639]: ntp: adjust (slew): +0.000030 sec

Once you've confirmed both of those things, you can just wait a bit for the hotfix to be installed (a couple of days maybe).

I've now got a steady login to my admin page and i have klicked the automatic update and even told it to search for betas.

BUT when i check the logfile i can't see the NTP time adjustments. How can i fix this? Or how to turn on?
