Compatibility with Hitachi 7K6000 disks

Background information:

Have a ReadyNAS Pro 6 unit with 6 Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 3TB disks (which have a 512 bytes sector size). Recently added the last 2 disks to fill all 6 drive bays. Have been using this NAS unit for the past 5 years without problems.

While reformatting the 6-disk volume to dual-redundancy and then restoring the data from a backup, I noticed that all disks (including the 2 new ones) were showing a “Raw Read Error Rate” of over 30k some showed 65k. This error rate would grow to 65k, cycle back to 0, and then progressively go up again (in a continuous cycle).

While discussing the issue with the vendor that sold me the disks, they indicated that Hitachi no longer manufactures the Ultrastar 7K3000.

Decided to replace the disks with something more current and selected the Hitachi 7K6000 4TB disks.

Found 2 models of the 7K6000 4TB disks: HUS726040ALE610 (512e sector size) and HUS726040ALA610 (512n sector size).

The 7K6000 is not listed in the compatibility list for ReadyNAS Pro 6.

The 7K4000 4TB disk (which is in the compatibility list, but no longer manufactured) has a 512e sector size.

Question:

Which one of the 7K6000 4TB models (512e or 512n) would stand a better chance of success with the ReadyNAS Pro 6 (on which I’ve been using 7K3000 3TB disks with 512 sector size)?

Thank you for the help.

Re: Compatibility with Hitachi 7K6000 disks

In a ReadyNAS 628 and a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus, which self-identifies as a ReadyNAS Pro, the following HGST 4TB-10TB drives are among those that I have used successfully:

HGST HUS724040ALE640 4TB (Ultrastar)

HGST HUS726040ALE614 4TB (Ultrastar)

HGST HUH728080ALE600 8TB (He8)

HGST HUH721010ALE600 10TB (He10)

Re: Compatibility with Hitachi 7K6000 disks

Hitachi's disk business was sold to Western Digital in 2012, so Hitachi isn't manufacturing any of these drives anymore.

Note that the HCL isn't being updated for legacy NAS like the pro-6 for some time.  So you kind of are on your own.

512e means that the native sector size of the disk is 4096 bytes, but that it emulates 512 byte sectors.  I suspect the 512e model is likely a bit newer, so I'd probabably go with that.  Though both are still listed on the hgst website ( https://www.hgst.com/products/hard-drives/ultrastar-7k6000 )

The WDC Red Pro is another option - it is somewhat cheaper, and also has enterprise specs.

Thank you for the response. Decided to try the HUS726040ALA610 (512n sector size) and hope for the best. Will know for sure next week after installing the new drives.
