Complete newbie - installing old HDD

Just trying to set up my new readynas RND2000. First up, sincere apologies - this is my first ever NAS. Two questions:

1) I am waiting for my free drive from Netgear to arrive, so in the meantime took my Seagate Freeagent desktop 700gb drive out of its casing and slotted it into the NAS. However, it says there is 0GB available and I cant seem to add data to the drive. Am I right in thinking I have to format the old drive (it has some data on it), and if so, whats the best way to go about it to make sure the NAS can use it?

2) As a complete newbie to this, is there a good thread / website that people can recommend to get me up to speed. For example, i know I want to share data on my drive over the web but Im getting confused by the terminology (shares, CIFS, AFP...)!

Sheesh, now I know how my dad must feel when Im trying to explain to him what a mouse is

EDIT: the drive is a Barracuda 7200.11 and is on the compatability list. I have tried to link up the drive to my laptop directly again via usb but windows isnt recognising it now - have I somehow broken the drive, or has the NAS altered it in some way so that windows cant read it via usb?

Re: Complete newbie - installing old HDD

No need to apologise. Everyone here bought their first NAS at some point and this forum is here to help people like you.

1. To wipe the disk, you should factory default (with the disk in the NAS): http://www.readynas.com/forum/faq.php#How_do_I_reset_the_ReadyNAS_to_factory_default%3F. You can't move a disk from a PC or USB enclosure into the NAS or vice versa without needing to wipe it: http://www.readynas.com/forum/faq.php#Can_I_use_the_disk%28s%29_that_were_previously_used_in_a_PC%2F....

2. You can take a look at the manuals: http://www.readynas.com/docs, the FAQ (see link fourth to the left of the top right of this page).

Shares are folders on your volume that can be used to separate out your data e.g. to have different permissions for different users, or just to keep it organised.

CIFS is Windows File Sharing, AFP is Mac, NFS is Linux, Rsync is great for incremental backups using Linux.

If you need to get data off the disk you may need to try some data recovery software.

One more thing, what size is the free disk. If it is less than 700GB you'll need to put it in the NAS before the 700GB disk as you can't add smaller capacity disks.

Gotcha, cheers mate. Yea, I picked up on the fact you need to install the smaller drive first, but thanks for the headsup. The free disk is 1tb. Great forum, Im gona get reading...

Re: Complete newbie - installing old HDD

Hi,

First of all, sorry if I'm bringing up an old thread back up but it's closely related to my problem and I couldn't find any answers in other threads.

So here's my set-up:
ReadyNas DUO with a 2TB disk in slot1. I have been using this set-up for a while now and it's all working well!

But now I want to add another disk (1TB) in slot2; this disk was used as an external disk on a macbook and already has some files on it.
When I put it in slot2, it recognizes it but I can't use the drive.

Now I know I probably need to format it but I don't know how (and in which format)... If I do a factory reset of my ReadyNas Duo, will I lose the data that I have on my 2TB disk in slot1?

Also, I want to use the 2nd disk purely to augment the capacity of my readynas duo; not for back-up using RAID.

Thank you in advance for your help!

EDIT: I found someone another post that is more closely related to my problem; http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=56158
Sorry for bringing up this post from the dead 😕

As you guessed, you will need to factory default your unit and select RAID 0 as the RAID-level: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=425

Yes, you will lose your data so you'll need to back it up to external USB. Depending on how you're using your NAS (backup only, primary storage, etc.) you may want to consider getting an external USB for regular backups of the NAS, as a single drive failure could result in data loss on both drives: http://www.readynas.com/?p=3153

When re-configuring your NAS, you will need to install the smaller capacity drive in slot 1. Bear in mind that any data on the drive will be nuked, as the NAS will re-partition and format it for use with the Duo. Make sure that the disk is listed on the HCL: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=82

You may also want to test it using vendor tools: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=388

Re: Complete newbie - installing old HDD

Thanks Dave,

I'm "just" using my NAS to share my movies across the house really; so it's not too important if i lose them.
The annoying thing is that I just have that 2TB and that 1TB disk at the moment, so impossible for me to back-up the movies in order to install the 2 disks into the NAS...I guess I'll have to wait a bit...

Also, when you say "external usb"; are you talking about the ones that with or without the power adaptor? Does it make a difference?

Cheers
