FEEDBACK ON LONG TERM USE OF READYNAS

I have had my ReadyNas ( V1 so I now discover) for 18months or so and have just today discovered that Netgear (bless their black hearts) have turned off the ReadyNas photos.

YES I say turned off because that is what it is. Forget the market speak about upgrades and migration etc this feature has been effectively turned off and my feedback on the ReadyNas as a device is now unprintable. This feature could still be provided on the V1 if Netgear wanted to provide it BUT they have decided to stop providing it.

I will now not be advising anyone to invest in a ReadyNas device.

Why not? Because what Netgear have done is identical to a scenario in which Microsoft for example says "Oh by the way now that we have Windows 7 we are turning off the features in Windows XP. What you dont like it? What you cannot use your PC any more? Well hard luck"

No more netgear products for me ( and yes the lower case n is deliberate - why should I honour them with a title) :neener:

PS What next will they turn off on the earlier models DLNA?

Re: FEEDBACK ON LONG TERM USE OF READYNAS

It's unfortunate, but Photos I was developed by a 3rd party and reliant on 3rd party servers. It became too expensive.

You can read about some alternatives to Photos I here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=63258

Unfortunately the newer Photos II could not be ported to Sparc ReadyNAS. That would have been the ideal solution.

Re: FEEDBACK ON LONG TERM USE OF READYNAS

ReadyDLNA uses the open source minidlna project which is developed by a senior NetGear ReadyNAS developer who's one of the longest serving members of the ReadyNAS team (I wouldn't be surprised if he still has some Sparc units of his own at his home). See http://minidlna.sourceforge.net/ Like all open source software the minidlna used by the ReadyNAS is included in the GPL (http://www.readynas.com/gpl). This will definitely not be removed as a feature. There's recently been a 1.0.25 update posted here: ReadyDLNA Update Add-ons which despite not being mentioned in the Release Notes is also included in 4.1.10 beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222

Apart from ReadyNAS Photos (I), the only software on the v1 reliant on a 3rd party service and 3rd party servers would be ReadyNAS Vault. Considering ReadyNAS Vault is a service the user pays for and is available on the newer ReadyNAS platforms I'd be quite surprised if it was discontinued anytime soon.

The NetGear ReadyNAS team has a good history of continuing to provide firmware updates even after products are discontinued. They have discontinued the entire Sparc ReadyNAS line (e.g Duo/NV+ v1) but continue to provide firmware updates for it.
