Multiple Disk Failures - Next?

Hi gents,

my setup is ReadyNAS Duo SPARC with 2 disks WD20EARS in X-Raid. Latest RAIDiator.
Channel 2 reported SATA errors and disk failures so i replaced it with another disk which is providing the same problems. I have run an independent manufacter test on the first disk which terminated with no issue (i am actually using the disk on a external drive!).

Considering Netgear suggests to try a third disk before blaming it on the NAS itself i was wondering if it is worth another attempt. Buying the second disk means reaching the orginal value of the NAS as old disks tend to be expansive as manufacters know they have a niche in the NAS markets.

My warranty is still valid, is there any test you'd do before triggering that?

Thanks.

What version of RAIDiator is on the NAS?

Have you run the WD LifeGuard Diagnostics on the second disk that failed?

You may wish to try a WD RED 2TB disk. If that is considered to have failed then most likely there is a problem with your NAS.

Re: Multiple Disk Failures - Next?

Hi thanks,

nope...no test on the second disk yet...the test on the first already concluded with no problems reported. RAIDaitor is 4.1.10 SPARC.
Would you reccomend mounting two different drives on the DUO? Also, WD RED 2TB is like 85€ plus 80€ of the new WD20EARS just bought is more or less the price i payed for the DUO in the first place 😄

I'll check the second disk as well, potentially remounting the old one also!

Thanks.

-Mixing disk models (with same capacity) on a v1 Duo is perfectly fine.

-I understand the temptation to use normal green drives in a NAS - and I have done it. My results were mixed, and I don't do it any more. The extra 5€ would have gotten you a drive tuned for NAS use, and a three-year warranty instead of the 1 year you got with the WD20EARS. (BTW, I'm a bit surprised you could find a WD20EARS, most on-line suppliers in the US don't have them anymore).

Since this is a new disk purchase, maybe you could look into an exchange with the seller?

I'll try that...actually as both disks passed the WD tests i guess i'll have to trigger netgear's warranty which is quite boring considering it's a NAS.

Thanks.

SATA interface hardware does fail sometimes, so it could be the duo.

Re: Multiple Disk Failures - Next?

Will see...ordered a WD RED. I hope it's not the DUO as it's really boring to have it checked by the manufacturer and i have basically reached the price of the DUO itself in disks 😄
