NV+ problems

Hi All,
I'm having some strange issues with my ReadyNAS NV+. I have three of these units now and two NV+ V2 units and thought I knew them well but can't figure this out.

First I got this error:
Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors
Then I got this error:
A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime.

I immediately assumed that a HDD had failed, so proceeded to shut down the NAS and test each one using the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools. To my astonishment all the drives passed with flying colours with not a single error between all four of them. I then put the disks back in and ran the Resync as suggested. At this point the unit crashed and was unreachable. I rebooted and the device then got stuck at the booting stage with the activity light flickering like crazy. I've just shut it down again for the time being while I seek advice, hopefully you guys have some?!

Thanks a lot

Rob

Re: NV+ problems

I understand it's hard to diagnose without the SMART logs. I'll get these for each disk and see if someone here can spot something I couldn't.

Re: NV+ problems

Did you do a long/extended test using LifeGuard or just a short/quick one?

Re: NV+ problems

Hi mdgm, thanks for replying! I did a quick test using Lifeguard. I ran it on each drive and it took about 5 minutes for each one. Would you recommend that I run the extended tests then? Do these often uncover problems that the quick tests miss? Thanks for your help.

Re: NV+ problems

Yes run extended tests.

A quick test may miss issues. In 5 minutes a test is not going to thoroughly check a drive.

Re: NV+ problems

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'll post back with my findings. Do you think I will lose all the data though because I started a resync and then it crashed? Or can I just now identify the faulty drive using the extended tests and put all the functioning drives back in with a replacement for the faulty one?

Re: NV+ problems

It is possible your data could be lost. Though if you can determine which disk is faulty and the NAS fails to boot without it you could try cloning the failed disk using dd_rescue

You should backup important data e.g. from one NAS to another.

Re: NV+ problems

Thanks, all my data is backed up to 10x 3TB & 4TB Seagate Goflex disks so its safe. Hopefully the extended tests will turn up something.

Re: NV+ problems

Wow 16 hours to run an extended check in Data Lifeguard! So I got the 3rd out of 4 disks and the extended check failed - saying too many corrupt sectors to continue so I have my culprit. I have therefore removed the failed drive and replaced it with a new one. In RAIDar the NAS shows as running a File System Check. It also says it is running a resync that will take 77 hours to complete! Is it trying to run the FS check and the resync simultaneously? or will it wait until the FS heck has finished before starting the resync? Also do you know if there is any chance of what has happened here corrupting my data? I have thousands of files and no way to verify them all. I was thinking about just doing a factory reset and restoring from backup? Would love to know your thoughts!

Re: NV+ problems

If you have a good backup then a factory reset would be a good way to go.

Re: NV+ problems

Well I left the FS check running and the NAS has come back online. I did a random check of various files and everything seems ok so I think I'll leave it as it is. Thanks for your help though would never have spotted the errors without running the extended scan as you suggested!
