New Seagate disk ST4000VN008 dead?
I just purchased ReadyNAS 212 with two new Seagate ST4000VN008 4TB drives. Upon initial install of the drives startup of the NAS for the first time one of the disks reported errors and the volume reported as "degraded". Upon reboot the "bad" disk is trying to sync and gets about 5 minutes into the process before making a ominous noise - a sort of repeating spin up/spin down. I have shut down the NAS and rebooted again, swapping the drives in the bays and get the same results. The NAS then says the disk has synced but the disk is not recognized and the sound persists. I am guessing the disk was bad to start with. Can anyone help confirm this?
Thanks!

What errors were reported for the disk?
It does sound like a bad disk. You could hook the disk up to a PC and test it using SeaTools if you want.

Re: New Seagate disk ST4000VN008 dead?
Also, the power light on the NAS is now blinking in a double blink fashion-IE. blink, blink, pause - blink, blink, pause - etc. The disk led (on the failed disk) is blinking continuously.
What does the blink blink, pause mean?
Thanks!

Hi mfat,
I tried checking but we do not seem to have the LED pattern legend for the new ReadyNAS units.
Were you able to finish the test being requested? It should give us more information about the status of the HDD compared to the LED pattern.

Re: New Seagate disk ST4000VN008 dead?
I do not have a PC available to test the HDD. I am going to return it and request a replacement drive.
I am still wondering about the LED pattern error.
Thanks.

Hi mfat,
Thanks for the update. I will check if I can inquire about the LED patterns on the new units.

Re: New Seagate disk ST4000VN008 dead?
Hi, I have had similar issue with Readynas DUO v2. After about one year of using two 2TB Seagate SV35 in RN DUOv2, both of them started to be very slow on data transfer and sometimes went offline. I removed it and connected to my PC and then I tried the long S.M.A.R.T. test. No error was found, but both drives have even after formatting very unstable output performance, particularly at write. It looks as if RN2v2 has caused some kind damage to the control electronics of these drives.
