I'm a complete newbie when it comes to NAS so be gentle....
I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive system to back up my movies, pictures, music etc. The reason being the external 1Tb hard drive I had was close to being full and went down last week.... 😞
I've found a ReadyNAS NV+ for sale on Kijiji (I'm in Canada) for $225. I offered $150 and he said $180. First question would $180 be a good deal ? I realise I'll have to buy disks on top of that.
I've had a browse but cant find what the highest capacity Hard Drives it will take on the latest firmware. I'm hoping 4Tb each.
The main use would be to store pictures, stream movies to my XBMC devices on the TV's and possible music to the ipad's etc.
Any help would be very much appreciated and a quick response would be even better in case it is a good deal and someone beats me to it.
Another option is to get an RN102 (2-bay unit), which can be found for ~$200 US new. That will take 4 TB drives, and would give you 4x the storage you have now with RAID redundancy. Personally I think that's a better deal.
There are two NV+ models (v1 and v2), and both are obsolete. For comparison, the street price of an RN104 (the current comparable model with 4 bays) is $300 new.
Whether $180 is a fair price depends on whether it is an NV+ or an NV+ v2. The labels are confusing, so ask the seller what firmware it is running. 5.x is the v2. 4.1.x is the v1. The NV+ (v1) can only take 2 TB drives. An NV+ v2 will take 4 TB. I wouldn't use any seller photos to identify the unit, as they often are not photos of the actual unit being sold.
I wouldn't recommend a v1 unless you already have one, and wanted an identical spare. A v2 is plausible at that price, but I think I would rather go for a new RN102 myself.
If you do purchased used, make sure you get all the drive trays and all the mounting screws. If they are not included, pass on it. Also, Netgear warranties are NOT transferable. So there would be no support.

I've asked the seller what version it is and if complete etc. Don't know now if to take a gamble on it if it is a v2 ?!?!
$250 (price of RN102 in Canada incl tax & delivery) plus a couple of drives will take me more than I can pay I think but will look further into it. Great info.
