Pro Business Ed, odd power supply behavior, cpu hot, RMA ???

Hello,

Background on this, ReadyNAS unit (purchased new few years ago),

Model: ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition [X-RAID2]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.25
Memory: 1024 MB [4-5-5-15 DDR2]
Volume C: Online, X-RAID2, 6 disks, 0% of 14 TB used <<----- dual redundancy setup;

Been looking through the forum, to match up to symptoms of this unit but not quite good matches so far on DIY, thus thinking ready for RMA of this unit (???).

Current symptoms

a) Power on, takes ~20 mins for the unit to start up (but it does)

b) After shutdown (whether from FrontView or from front panel button), starts back up again on its own

c) CPU hot, Temp CPU 71.5 C / 160 F [Normal 0-60 C / 32-140 F] <<------- can i put some new thermal paste down between the fan and CPU?

I found a forum post that shows how to remove the side panel, but the original post referenced is no longer present. 😞

Maybe the internal needs to be cleaned, little vacuum work perhaps.

Any suggestion on whether the unit is due for RMA?

Thanks much!

Start with a can of compressed air (Staples, Office Depot, Costco, etc all carry these). Take it outside, open the side panel, and blow all the dust out of it.

The CPU fan may be clogged up, not moving the heat like it used to. If still not helping, may need to remove the CPU heatsink and put on some fresh thermal paste. If you aren't comfortable with that, find a techy friend or local computer store; should only take a few minutes to perform.

... and be careful not to spin the fans too fast with the compressed air; their bearings can't withstand high RPMs and will fail if you do.

Okay, thanks for all the inputs. I will start by cleaning out the inside and lay down fresh thermal paste.

So, after the ~17 or so hours spent on resync (from adding new 6 x 4 TB HDDs), the Health page now looks as follows,

Device Description Status
Disk 1 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 38 C / 100 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 2 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 39 C / 102 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 3 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 37 C / 98 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 4 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 37 C / 98 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 5 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 38 C / 100 F , Write-cache ON OK
Disk 6 Seagate ST4000VN000-1H4168 3726 GB , 36 C / 96 F , Write-cache ON OK
Fan SYS 922 RPM OK
Fan CPU 2136 RPM OK
Temp SYS 56 C / 132 F [Normal 0-65 C / 32-149 F] OK
Temp CPU 31.5 C / 88 F [Normal 0-60 C / 32-140 F] OK
UPS 1 Not present NA

I understand that the resync will be hard on the system and the drivers, but not clear if it's also supposed to drive the cpu out of spec on this Pro Business Edition unit.

We do have other Pro units, mainly Pro 6's, and those seem to have higher limit on the cpu temp, mainly 75 C.

Nonetheless, i will clean the internal.

By the way, anyone think the issue with power supply calls for RMA? Perhaps my forum searches was not strong enough, but i was not able to get hit(s) on this power down/on symptom i'm having. Thanks.

Just to be exact with the circumstance, the cpu temp showed out of spec, ~71 to 72 C during the entire (confirmed from reviewing the log) resync period, all ~17 or so hours.

How is your system doing and are you happy with the Seagate ST4000VN000's?

Re: Pro Business Ed, odd power supply behavior, cpu hot, RMA

As a owner of a BE Pro6 with startup issues (took about 10 minutes) I can say that
after replacing the power supply the startup after switching on power is about 10 seconds.

With Software 4.2.x installed I also posted that on a 'shutdown' it is normal for the unit to automatically
power up after five minutes unless you set power switch to 'off' or unplug box. There is a script ran on
shutdown that sets the RTC to power on after 5 minutes if there is no pre-set power schedule.

Re: Pro Business Ed, odd power supply behavior, cpu hot, RMA ???

I'll share my experience.

I had exactly the same issue , the unit was on all the time , but in the few times I powered it off there was quite often a 15 min heart stopping wait before it would power up.

whilst orgainizing for a new project I powered it of and moved it. Unlike other occasions I did not power it in again for 12 hours. This time it did not power on .

checked warranty , just over a year out of date - no problem I'll have to pay for new PSU

checked forum , it's just an ATX PSU.  strip down the readynas pro and plug in new PSU ( large and won't fit in cabinet). First time power up , check shutdown , startup just to check, works a dream.

I was not surprised to see a reply from netgear in my inbox after a few hours, expecting to pay over the odds for a new PSU I opened the email:

netgear ar have completely washed their hands of it - haven't even got a part/no !

this has just made netgear fall from the pedestal I've put them on. I'm not a big hitter at home, but my turned around opinion will cost them at work !

if it was really old I could understand it , but 1 year out of warranty for a business product ?

anyway , extracted the PSU , googled on , £37 inc vat , be here Tuesday morning.

bye bye netgear 😞
