Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

Hello,

I have ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition data storage server with six hard drives (Seagate ST31500341AS, 1.5TB), but two of them are borken. Can I use two 2TB hard drives(Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001) to replace?

Or other options?

Thanks,

Nicho

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

Yes you can replace the failed disks with 2TB drives. one at a time (of course). Are you using RAID-6 or X-RAID2 dual-redundancy? If you are only using X-RAID2 single-redundancy or RAID-5 you would be in a lot of trouble now.

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

Thanks. After replacing one disk, do I need to reboot or the machine will do it automatically?

when I check the RAID Settings, I got the following information:
Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks
Status: Not redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.

Now I can read the files from the machine.

Regards,

Xiao

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

It will automatically initiate the resync.

That sounds like you are using X-RAID2 single-redundancy.

What is your current volume capacity?

Do you have an up to date backup?

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

Please see the information of vol C:

Volume C: Online, X-RAID2, 6 disks, 87% of 6944 GB used

We didn't enable backup jobs.

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

If you can still access your data what indicates to you that two of your drives are failing? Do the disks have SMART errors?

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

I got the following email message from the alert contact email:

"Disk 2 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible.
Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk."

When I check status of the machine via Web, status of Disk6 is dead.

I guess you should backup your data ASAP, then replace the disks one at a time, wait for resync to complete then replace the next disk.

I replaced disk 6, but the status of disk was still dead. Do I need to do something more?

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

I check logs and find the information of "Error encountered uploading update image" and "Newly added disk has failed SMART test. Please check disk 6 (/dev/sdf)". What do they mean? The new disk I replaced is brand new and exact same with other five disks.

The log information:

Tue Jan 7 12:48:27 WET 2014 Newly added disk has failed SMART test. Please check disk 6 (/dev/sdf)
Tue Jan 7 12:48:00 WET 2014 Error encountered uploading update image.
Tue Jan 7 12:47:51 WET 2014 System is up.

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

The new disk may be bad. Try hooking it up to your PC and check it using e.g. SeaTools if SeaGate disk, WD LifeGuard Diagnostics if WD disk etc.

Re: Pro Pioneer Edition hard drive broken

I replace a brand new disk to disk 6. But when I check status of the machine via Web, status of Disk6 is still dead and it display the old disk Manufacturer No, not the new one.

any idea?
