Processor upgrade on 516

Hi!

Will the 516 support all LGA1155 processors? Like the Xeon E3-1280V2? Also, does the 516 have active CPU-cooling? If so, how tall may it be? (On my Pro 6 I measure 55mm (ish).)

I am looking for raw transcoding power.

Thanks,
David

BUMP

It'd be nice to know if the 516's CPU is upgradable after buying 4 Ultra a month before the 4 Ultra Plus came out, and yet neither transcodes Plex well...

Thanks!

Re: Processor upgrade on 516

I think the CPU might be replaceable in the 516 but do note that replacing the CPU voids the warranty. Probably only some of the CPUs that can be installed in the same socket as the stock one would be compatible.

Re: Processor upgrade on 516

i7-3770K works...
Active cooling on MB works, used Titan DC-155A915Z/RPW(30mm tall), not sure about speed control by temp...
Has standard mounting(4) for 1155/1156 Heat Sink, but standard screws are too small and wrong thread pitch for MB nuts..
Screws for AMD Socket G34 bracket worked perfect to retain heat sink...
Also have to rewire fan connector, RN 516 does not use standard wiring for CPU or Case fan...

Standard PWM Fan:
1 - Black(GND), 2 - Yellow(12v), 3 - Green(tach), 4 - Blue(Control)

RN 516 PWM Fan:
1 - Blue, 2 - Black, 3 - Yellow, 4 - Green

Re: Processor upgrade on 516

Can the i7-3770K be underclocked on the motherboard in the ReadyNAS 516?

The max TDP for the i7-3770K is pretty high.

I think the i7-3770S would probably be a better choice, as its max TDP is only 10 W higher than the stock CPU.

A downside of the i7-3770 CPUs is that they don't support ECC RAM according to the specs on Intel's website.

Re: Processor upgrade on 516

Sounds like the E3-1265LV2 would be a good fit - if supported. It's a Quad with HT running at a base speed of 2.5Ghz within a 45W TDP - it also supports ECC RAM.

Re: Processor upgrade on 516

I just ordered the "Intel Xeon E3-1275 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80637E31275V2" has onboard video and does support unbuffered ECC RAM...

Sorry for bringing up this old thread but:
Did you succeed? Is your RN up and running with its new heart with everything working? Please tell us!

That's the one we use in the 716X.

The E3-1265LV2 should work though do note that CPU upgrades void the warranty.

Hi mdgm, thanxx for your fast answer

in another thread (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=77535#p432703) you wrote:

Whoops. The CPU in the 716 is actually the E3-1265L v2.
Both units share the same BIOS, but we hard code support for the hardware we ship in the firmware.

That's what makes me worry a bit - of course no warranty, but I don't want to loose some funktions.
I don't fear the upgrade itself (already done some with other hardware) but this is only an option if the NAS is working smooth after.
