RN104 Disk Replacement
Hi all,
I currently have a RN104 with 4 x 4TB WD RED (FRX) drives installed and using RAID 5 and working for some time. A while back before pandemic Drive in slot 3 failed (most likely due to a large amount of data being deleted in one action. Either way the drive has to be replaced.
I now have at long last a replacement WD Red Plus (FZX) which is a CMR drive and therefore good to use for NAS.
Is it a case I just take out the drive in slot 3 and insert the replacement and away it goes with a re-sync and all data remains ?
Many thanks in advance
Regards

Yes, and I generally recommend doing a hot-swap with the NAS running.
There is some risk of data loss, since there is no raid redundancy until the resync completes. So if another drive fails, you will lose your data. So a backup is still recommended.

Good tip - considering I was going to shut it down and then swap out. Cheers @StephenB

Are you saying that another drive could fail when re-syncing after the drive swap ?

Yes. Drives can fail at any time, and they are under load during the resync (every sector on the remaining drives is read as part of the resync).

Re: RN104 Disk Replacement
Morning @StephenB
Just an update. Hard drive (WD Red Plus 4TB) arrived on Monday last (Sept 13) so removed the failed HDD and inserted the new drive while the NAS was on.
System notive changed to Degraded, System Re-syncing
Today is Friday and everything still going well with re-syncing. Only 5% left and hopefully everything will be back up and running. Kind of ecpected to be a long wait as it is a RN104 and 4.4TB free of 10.9TB
WIl continue to update. Many thanks for the help
