RN104 Plex not installing on OS 6

Hi everybody,

some years ago I had Plex installed on my ReadyNAS RN104, then I removed it.

Now I don't even find it in the available apps, but if I go on Plex website I can download the installer for my NAS, but it fails installation.

Is Plex no longer supported on my system?

Thanks to everyone who answers

Correct.  Plex decided to host the app themselves some years ago.

A couple of issues that are likely getting in the way:

  1. The Debian 8 (Jessie) OS that the ReadyNAS uses has been deprecated and archived by the Debian folks.
  2. If you are running 6.10.8, Netgear has permissions wrong on their repository.

It is possible to patch the apt library sources to overcome the first issue - there is information on another thread.

Netgear is looking into their repository problem - that might not get in your way, but if it does, you can downgrade to 6.10.7 before installing it.

Either way, you probably will need to install the Plex deb using ssh.

Given the install issues, and the limited memory and CPU speed of your NAS, the easiest path forward would be to host plex on an always-on PC (linux or windows), and map the media share(s) on the NAS to drive letters (PC) or mount them to local mount points (linux).  That can be done using a small form factor PC.

Another option would be to switch to DLNA, which is built into  OS 6.

Re: RN104 Plex not installing on OS 6

Thanks a lot,
I’m not skilled in installing via ssh…
Now I am hosting Plex Media on a Mac and pointing to the desired share on NAS as you wrote. But I do not want to keep this Mac always on…
DLNA is already turned on on the share, and this is the way I have used until now, but if I change device during a movie, I have to start it from the beginning and then go to the correct timing manually. Plex would solve this…
Maybe I don’t understand if you mean something different than this.

Got that.  But hosting it on a Mac (or a Window or Linux PC) is IMO your best option.  The RN100 series has very little memory and a rather slow CPU.  Installation is also complicated by the deprecation of Debian 8 (Jessie).

Surely you are right, I have no other better idea than this. Maybe I will change my NAS but for now I will keep this config.
Thanks again!
