ReadyNAS Duo V1 just sits there with the fan full pelt after power cuts

Hi all hoping you can help me.  I recently (6 months ago) dusted off this NAS and loaded it up with 2 disks.  It was working flawlessly up until last week where after a series of power cuts it now just keeps the fan on full speed when starting along with flashing all the lights 3 times every 10 seconds.  I have tried a factory reset with the PIN in the back for 25 seconds but this does nothing.  Is this device bricked?  I hope not as its was running well up until this point.

PS RAIDAR doesnt see it either.

Try powering down, and removing the disks (label by slot, so you know which is which).

Then power up, and see if RAIDar finds it (reporting a no disks status).

Gave this a go and kept scanning for 30 mins plus and nothing 😞

Did RAIDar find it before the power problem?

Are you seeing a blinking light pattern on the LEDs?

LED blink behavior for 2 disk systems is three quick blinks of all disk LEDs and the backup LED, followed by an 1s delay, followed by a number of slow blinks.  The number of slow blinks will be the error code.

Current error codes:
1  - Vendor mismatch
2  - No disks detected
3  - Bad contents on root partition of disks
4  - Flash error
5  - Unsupported RAID configuration

Also, is the ethernet LED lit on the back of the NAS?

Yes RAIDar was finding it before the issue.  The blinks are 3 fast of the blue power LED the activity light as well as 1 and 2 disk all at once.  This occurs exactly every 10 seconds.  In between the 10 seconds the disk 1 light flickers on and off constantly.

3 blinks occur with disks in or out.  I have even swapped for 2 new disks and tried to factory reset but keep getting the 3 blinks every 10 seconds.  This is really frustrating.

ethernet light is on but not blinking.  Fan stays on full speed always.  Its almost as if the NAS OS cant boot in my opinion.

ne more thing I have also tried reseating the RAM as that was a recommendation I read somewhere.

Agreed. I was wondering if you'd get the blinking code for "bad flash", but you apparently didn't.

It's possible that there is an issue with the poewr brick (though I think it's a long shot).  Still, you might consider doing a risk-buy of a compatible replacement.

You know what I was thinking the very same about the power.  I may have an alternate power supply here to try.  I will let you know.

I have an exact replacement power supply 12v 5a that I plugged in but still the same issue persists.

That makes me think that the SATA controller in the NAS might have failed.

However, a factory default (with the disks in place) might work.  Do you have data that you need to off-load?

So I am doing this correctly I power off the device by pulling the power cable.  Give it a few seconds then pop the cable back in.  I then press and hold the reset button at the rear for 25 seconds.  I don't hold the power button as well?  Some posts I see needing the power button held for 25 seconds also and some saying no just hold the pin.

Also, the biggest disk size supported by the Duo v1 is 2 TB.

I suggest using just one disk for now, as that avoids doing the disk mirroring.  Sometimes the Duo v1 isn't responsive during the disk mirroring (as it does put a significant load on the system).

You could try unformatting the disk, and then powering up the NAS with the unformatted disk in place.  That normally will trigger a factory install.

But I am thinking that perhaps your chassis hardware has failed.

Not really "common", but nothing lasts forever.  Your NAS is more than 10 years old and I suspect most DuoV1's are retired by now (before they had a chance to fail).

Mine is still operational (as is an NV+ built around the same time).  IMO they were well built. 

But the hardware is aging - the Duos were launched in 2008, and discontinued in 2011, so they are all 12-15 years old.
