ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hello,

I'll start by stating I do not know what this "*Select Location" thing is while creating this discussion, so I apoligize if I used the wrong "Location".

Here is the issue:

I have a Netgear ReadyNAS RN3220 with 8 x 3 TB drives running Firmware "6.9.4 Hotfix 1" in a RAID6 array and it is showing the volume as degraded. I hovered over all 8 disks in the RAID6 array and none of them show any errors and all have green lights. I don't understand what is degraded. The online logs only state the volume is degraded so thats no help and I dont know where to look in the logs I downloaded, I tried to attache the ZIP file but I got a error saying it can only take jpg, gif, png, or pdf. I'll add the screenshot of the volumes tab instead...

We only have 2.86 TB used out of 13.46 TB available so I know it is not a full storage issue.

I am not sure what "Scrub", "Balance", or "Disk Test" will do so I haven't tried those yet.

This device is located in a Data Center 2 hrs away so I do not have physical access to it right now.

Not sure what else I need to share about this but ask and I shall try my best to get you an answer.

Thank you,

Leif

Hi lfrye,

I agree with @StephenB. Replacing the faulty drive will be the best option.

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hi lfrye,

Welcome to the Community!

The "Degraded" status means there is no RAID redundancy, so any disk failure will result in loss of the volume.

You can send to me the logs so we can analyze it. You may upload it to Google Drive then send to me the download link via PM (private message).

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hi John,

Thank you for the reply.

This is kinda odd since there hasn't been any changes to the RAID 6 array and this warning first came up on 7/11/2019. I would think this warning would have been here since the array was created years ago. How does that work?

Also, RAID 6 arrays can handle 2 drive failures since it uses two parity stripes on each disk. So I shouldn't be getting this warning message since RAID is redundant array of independent disks. Kinda odd aswell.

Can I send you the logs via OneDrive link?

Thank you,

Leif

You will get this message if one (or two ) drives have failed or dropped out of the array.  You haven't lost data, but you are being warned that the RAID protection has been degraded.

The green disk status doesn't necessarily mean the disks are healthy.  I suggest you should send @JohnCM_S a link to your log zip file so he can take a look at what's going on.

If you don't have a backup of your files, then I suggest that you make one.  RAID isn't enough to keep your data safe (not even RAID-6).

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hi lfrye,

I just saw your logs and it looks like disk 2 is already marked as faulty.

md127 : active raid6 sde3[0] sda3[8] sdb3[5] sdc3[6] sdd3[7] sdi3[3] sdh3[2] sdf3[1](F)
      17552488704 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [8/7] [U_UUUUUU]

Checking the disk_info.log, there are 5 current pending sectors on your disk 2.

Device:             sdf
Controller:         0
Channel:            1
Model:              WDC WD3000FYYZ-01UL1B1
Serial:             XXXXXX

  ATA Error Count:                0
  Reallocated Sectors:            0
  Reallocation Events:            0
  Spin Retry Count:               0
  Current Pending Sector Count:   5
  Uncorrectable Sector Count:     0

RAID 6 has 2 parity drives but if one fails, it is still degraded. The volume becomes degraded whenever one drive outside of the total number is out.

Hi JohnCM_S,

Thank you for the info. Is there a way to fix this issue or is a drive replacement the best move forward?

Thank you,

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hi John,

We replaced the drive but it is not rebuilding. How do I make it rebuild the disk? It currently says the state is healthy but has been stuck on "Balancing in progress 0% complete" since we replaced the drive 4 days ago.

Thank you,

Leif

Odd.  Did you start the balance before you replaced the drive?

Can you download the log zip file and post mdstat.log (copy/paste it into a reply).

Balance was done by my on site tech after he installed the new drive.

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

I was getting errors when trying to download the logs so management I told me to reboot the NAS. Just before it rebooted I received email notification saying the balancing had completed then the device rebooted. When it came back online 10 mins later all the drives were Blue and health was normal.

I really should have just rebooted the NAS before coming here, but I was kinda worried I would lose the array.

Thank you StephenB for your help!

So the volume is rebuilt now?

You can confirm that by looking at mdstat.log in the log zip file.

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

This was caught in the spam filter for a while, so I just saw it.

md1 is the degraded volume (sdj is missing)

md1 is the swap partition, it isn't part of your array.  But still it should be fixed.

I suggest testing sdj in a windows PC (using lifeguard for Western digital, seatools for Seagate).  After the long read test, you can also run the destructive write-zeros test.  That will pick up issues that are missed by the read-test - and it will also unformat the drive (which is needed before you try adding it back to the array).

FWIW, it is possible to manually add sdj to this md1 via ssh (and paid support could do this for you).  But you should test the disk anyway, since we don't know what failed the first time.

Re: ReadyNAS RN3220 Volume is Degraded but all green lights & no errors on disks

Hi StephenB,

There is not a drive with sdj labeling. I have drives labeled sda-sdi.

After rebooting the NAS device the RAID 6 rebuilt and appears good.

Thank you for your follow up,

Leif

Likely the drive got relabeled when you rebooted.

Get a fresh set of logs, and look at mdstat again.  Make sure that md1 lends with algorithm 2 [8/8] [UUUUUUUU] - with no _ in the [U...] part.
