ReadyNAS RNDu4000 - Comparing Backed UP shares to current server shares

Hi,

At our office we use the  ReadyNAS RNDu4000 and currently its running on the firmware number 4.2.31. In the past few month we had some issues regarding faulty drives which have now since replaced with new drives and done a rebuild of the NAS server. Now all backups work fine and all the drives are healthy.

Yet recently we have noticed that some files on our shares have gone missing even though the entire folder structure stayed intact when we did the rebuild (Just turns out that some folders are missing). Not all is lost though as we have old backups on external drives which have these files saved down.

What we are wanting to know is whether their is a way to compare the files on a backup drive (plugged into the NAS via usb) to those on the NAS shares since most if not all the files that are on our backup drive should be in our current NAS shares and part of the problem is that we don't know what could be missing? Currently we haven't noticed much but just few files and would like to do a check.

We have given windiff a try however it isn't able to compare the full drive at once as it crashes before completing and we would rather not have to scan each individual folder if need be (which there are 187 of over 2 shares). We have heard of SQL language however we aren't too sure what we'd have to do with that.

Just as context our NAS is setup with 2 main shares which we use througout the office...

  • Clients - This share has our project folders
  • Documents - This has our standard office admin documentation

If someone knows how we could get this done and would like to let us know that would be great appreciated.

Hope this is all clear

Regards

If you are only looking for missing files and folders, then you could access the NAS using ssh (linux command line). You could then use something like diff -q.

Thanks Stephen,

We've sorted it out. Found a program called WinMerge which allows us to compare up to 3 different directories and we can copy and paste directly from the program once its done the scan.
