ReadyNas 214 - Email Alerts not being sent after updating to version 6.10.3
I just upgraded my ReadyNAS 214 to version 6.10.3 from version 6.10.2 without any errors. I am now getting error in log stating
Mar 19, 2020 04:17:53 PM | System: Alert message failed to send. |
Alert message worked before but believe it was broken in 6.10.2 because I did not get an automated email alert that 6.10.3 was available.
Error Message:
"Cannot send a test message. CHeck authentication settings. Code: 5008010001"
This is not specific to my local NAS as I am getting the same error on my remote NAS.
Please advise.
Thanks very much,
Terry

What mail service are you using? Is it possible that they changed their security in some way?

Thanks very much for responding...
It is my same Gmail account that did work before. I just tried updating the alert information using my @Me.com address and got the same error so it appears this error is independent of the email address environment.

gmail is working for me with 6.10.3.
Has anything changed with your internet connection? Any rough idea on when it stopped working?

Interesting that it works for you. Just to confirm, the password that you are using for your gmail alert address is the password for your Netgear NAS admin user account, right?
I thought that something was off in my local IT environment as well but all of my other applications and devices that require the internet work fine. Also, my remote NAS which is on a totally different local IT environment is also having this same problem.

No. It's my gmail account password.

Re: ReadyNas 214 - Email Alerts not being sent after updating to version 6.10.3
Thanks for the reply.
I thought I had tried that before but just tried again with my Gmail password with same result. Not sure why we need to enter my Gmail password to send an email but just remembered that I have Two Factor Authentication set for my Google account. Wondering if that has something to do with it. Will try to set up a custom password within Google and try that in the Netgear. Again, not sure why we need to have a password in Netgear to send an email.
StephenB - You said earlier that it worked for you. Do you have Two Factor Authentication set up for your Google account?

You need the gmail password because the NAS is using your gmail account to send the email.

I do not (and that is likely your problem). I also allow less secure apps.

That is another approach that might work.

Re: ReadyNas 214 - Email Alerts not being sent after updating to version 6.10.3
Figured it out...yipee!!!!! root issue was the Google Two Factor Authentication.
In Netgear I deleted my Gmail address entry. Then hit the 'Clear' button which highlighed "Sign in with Google" and "Sign in with Microsoft Account". When I selected "Sign in with Google" it went to Google and asked if I would accept ReadyNAS access to send notifications. When I said yes, Google populated a special password in the Netgear password field which was not my regular Gmail password. When I selected "Accept & Save" a test message was generated. I tried a second test message and it worked fine.
All that being said however, before I did the process above, I used my @Me.com email address with my appropriate password but it did not work. Not sure why it did not work since I don't have any Two Factor Authentication on that Apple address.
Bottom line is that I am now getting messages to my Gmail account from my NAS which is great.
Thanks to all...

Re: ReadyNas 214 - Email Alerts not being sent after updating to version 6.10.3
Another update...
Just finished the same process on my remote location NAS and was successful using a Gmail account however, using a @Me.com email address does not work, i.e., still gets error. That tells me that there is something going on one way or another.
If Apple email accounts are not allowed then there should be a note/instructions/error message that ReadyNAS Alerts only work for Google and Microsoft accounts. Not sure if this is an error or not but should be forwarded to Netgear ReadyNas technical folks for review.

The alerts generally do work with all email providers when the account and ReadyNAS are properly configured. Two Factor Authentication is a problem for any device that is automatically sending emails on your behalf, so it does need to be turned off (or worked around with a device-specific password).
I'm not an Apple guy. But Apple says the settings for SMTP are:

- SSL Required: Yes
If you see an error message when using SSL, try using TLS or STARTTLS instead.- Port: 587

- Username: Your full iCloud email address (for example, emilyparker@icloud.com, not emilyparker)
- Password: Use the app-specific password that you generated when you set up the incoming mail server.

Re: ReadyNas 214 - Email Alerts not being sent after updating to version 6.10.3
Thank you for updating this thread with your fix. I was havuing the identical problem, and the same fix worked (deleting the gmail sign-on account and then signing in with google).
I recently had to make changes to my Thunderbird email app due to the same issue with gmail authentication, but I could not figure out how to get this to work again from the NAS until I found your post this morning.
But the issue was not really "Google Two Factor Authentication" (at least not for me); it was simply the recent change that Google made to block remote access by less secure applications. There are two ways around this problem - one is to jump through some hoops with google to authorize a "less secure" app, but the easiest by far is to just use the option to sign in with google anytime it is available.
